The Wire - Season 5 premiere - 1/6/08 -- "More With Less"

Great interpretation - I didn’t think of this, but it is spot on.

It makes me sad to see Beadie get screwed over tho…

Well it woudn’t be the fine show’s first continuity error.

Hah! We noticed that too, because we laughing at Method Man’s name being “Melvin” when we saw it, and then… it’s Calvin. Maybe Method Man didn’t like his character’s name being Melvin either.

There’s another mistake for anyone with the S3 DVDs. On the disk Features, they’ve got one called The Players. If you click on The Law, you’ll see that they have Mello as the Major and Colvin as the Lieutenant, but it’s the other way around. Whoops.

I’ve been thinking about the BPD’s problem with the 22 murders. In S4 they were focusing on the bodies found in the vacants. It’ll be next to impossible to tie those to Chris and Snoop. Sifting through all that detritus for hair? Even if they find hair that matches Chris or Snoop, Chris and Snoop can say yeah, they were in that building, so what?

They need to look at other unsolved murders – not just the ones found in the vacants. They have blood evidence tying Chris to Bug’s daddy’s murder.

Just watched the episode; I must say that I’ve never been so annoyed at a politician being a politician on TV before. Why didn’t you take the goddamned money, Tommy? No matter how much shit you eat in front of the cameras, you’ll still be known as a savior to Baltimoreans. Even looking at the governor’s race, can’t imagine that taking the money and fixing Baltimore would be worse than saving face and having a budgetary nightmare. Hell, you can even spin the losing face thing in your favor: “I’m Tommy Carcetti, and I’ll do anything to get the job done, even if it means ruining myself politically.”

In regards to Carcetti not taking the Governor’s offer, don’t forget that the deal also involved losing some local control of the schools to the state. That’s not something that any mayor is going to do lightly, regardless of the political affiliations.

I don’t think the scrawler knows anything about Rawls sexual orientation; I think it’s just anti-authority graffiti. Another one was “I just made another colonel”.

And the credits confirmed that the theme was performed by Steve Earle.

I like ZipperJJ’s take on McNulty’s phone call.

It’s entirely possible that this could be what the IMDb calls “Incorrectly regarded as a goof.” It may be that we’re supposed to assume that the BPD made that mistake, not the filmmakers. Note there is a different ID number, too.

Of course, now that it’s been caught, the filmmakers could say, “Oh yeah, we meant to do that,” whether they did or not.

Also, as for the short vignettes, I didn’t like them much, as I explained elsewhere.

I go into more detail in the other thread.

According to an article I read, there will be more of these short clips as the season progresses.

Just as an aside, I thought some people in this thread might find this story interesting. They’re pretty good reporters at the Baltimore Weekly City Paper (sometimes).

It’s long, but it’s about a real Baltimore City drug dealer turned informant. He got a million dollars worth of cocaine from LA, and never sent the money. The feds were on the phone when the guy from LA called.

And, with spiderwebs to Bill Clinton!

Fascinating stuff. Wonder why these guys weren’t taking lessons from The Wire and at least switching up burners every week or so. Unless the “DEA’s High Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas program” did Lester Freamon-esque network analysis based on cell tower info or something fancy like that. Considering how careful Brooks was, using aliases and hiding drugs in eletrical cable reels, you’d think anti-surveillance measures would be a priority as well.

I’m also wondering how this guy is still alive, as he seemed to be involved with a ton of serious players…
