I think you’re right. It’s Shamrock. I don’t know who 5-4 is thinking of, but I double checked TWOP to be sure. I love that Shamrock’s name is Sean McGinty. Just one of those little touches.
Yeah, Prissy Katlow. Apparently some people fuck her more than once, because Nick winds up in bed with her after Ziggy’s arrest. She must be hot stuff, that Prissy.
Very good. The exact line was “When you start coming with the customers, it’s time to get out of the business.” (Yes, I wrote it down last time I re-watched it.)
So that’s who she was! When I first saw the scene where he’s drinking with a girl in the playground and reminiscing about Zig, I assumed it was his “wife.” So when the cops bust into his parents’ house and he’s not there, but in her bed, I just thought she was some random neighborhood girl. I didn’t make the connection back to the paternity joke. Does he mention her name somewhere in that scene?
Yeah, Nick says it when she walks up to him in the playground, before they share their reminisces of how stupid Ziggy was. I remembered hearing it at the time and thinking, damn, that Prissy, she must be something of a ho after all. When I rewatched it with my husband, I pointed it out to him.
I thought Avon’s sentence was 7 years. In S2, he’s been in prison for awhile – a year, maybe – and snitching on Tilghman served to move his first probation hearing up by 12 months. If his sentence had only been two or three years, he would have been out earlier, or up for parole earlier. My S1 DVD is on loan so I can’t check for sure.
Funny about Prissy’s name. Pris Catlow is awfully close to Chris Partlow. They’re both pretty good at giving people something unexpected.
What tone of voice? What just happened? Please don’t say I was giving you attitude. I 100% definitely was NOT trying to do that. All I meant to say was, I didn’t know who you were thinking of. I’m thinking of when Bodie didn’t realize there were different radio stations. Maybe you were thinking of another time? And I just watched the scene again, in case I was wrong. It’s definitely Shamrock. If you don’t have the DVD to check: TWOP and The Wire Wiki.
I see where my confusion (and possibly co-correctness came from).
I’ve taken part in discussions of The Wire over at the HBO Community Boards for a few years and read their Episode Guides. Sometimes the threadshitters post a lot of nonsense (and spoil like you wouldn’t believe), so it’s kind of hard to separate the good stuff from the bad. However, since I was already a participant/reader of those, that’s who I consulted before posting questions.
They refer exclusively to Bodie’s Philadelphia accomplice as “Dragon” (my answer) at both places.
I had never consulted wiki and, now that I’ve read the link you supplied, I realize they refer to his as “Shamrock aka Dragon.”
You may be right, I was guessing. (My S1 DVD is on loan, too!) But IIRC, he only serves two years, right?
Still unanswered:
AP 1. How many ports did the van travel to? (The very first question!)
CS 15. Ex-Baltimore mayor Younger Tommy tells Carcetti his parable about having to eat a big bowl of shit. What two words modify “bowl” in his story?
CS: 21. What is the real-life relationship between the actress who played Grace, Cutty’s ex-girlfriend, and the one who played her drugged-out sister, who tells Cutty where to find Grace?
And we never even touched on Rubystreak’s survey question:
Actually, I like the S4 version best, although I can’t say why. It’s just so different from the others. Blind Boys, then Waits, and Steve Earle’s S5 version last.
New questions:
CS 25. How do the BPD refer to the central dispatcher on the radio, and what does it mean?
CS 26. What is the name of the drug co-op?
CS 27. Name at least two minor members of the co-op who are discussed outside the meetings.
CS 28. Who is the vice principal at Tilghman Middle, and what is the actress’ name?
(Keep in mind the sources I mentioned.) Rubystreak is so close on this one.
shefDave, your answer re: Shamrock was right.
New questions:
5-4-F6. What was the name/author of the book McNulty pulled off the shelf at Bell’s apartment after his death, realizing they never knew who they were pursuing?
5-4-F7. Which character actually characterized the first grand jury session for Clay Davis as a just a “love tap”?
5-4-F8. By what nickname does Ofc. Requer (who lets them know when there are fresh bodies) refer to Freamon and what is their former relationship?
Correct. Someone mentions this in the commentary on the DVD.
aka Tootsie Duvall.
IIRC, it’s Adam Smith’s The Wealth of Nations. (Good question!)
Since no one’s even taken a shot at my bowl question, I’m going to give it away: It was a Stieff silver bowl, significant because Steiff Silver was a world famous silver manufacturing company based in Baltimore for almost 100 years.
I won’t have the answer on the van and the ports until I finish rewatching S2. So far there are four – Wilmington, New Orleans, San Diego, and Seattle.
The book McNulty grabbed at Stringer’s place was The Wealth of Nations.
I’m guessing Rhonda’s the one who referred to the first grand jury session as a love tap.
The bowl of shit – I’m pretty sure “steaming” is in there somewhere.
I don’t remember a soldier taking a girl shopping at all! Did Kimi and Tosha go shopping?
I remember that whole scene but not the girl’s name. I think the scenario was that they (Bodie and Cutty?) were trying to figure out if a guy was stealing, and Cutty said, see if his girl has a lot of bling. If so, he’s stealing. She was a high school girl.
I just thought of something-- do you guys think Kimi and Tosha were lovers? TOr just partners in crime. The way Kimi freaked out about Tosha’s death, and how close they were, it made me wonder if they were the girl version of Omar/Brandon-Dante-Reynaldo … I don’t know, though, because Omar’s boyfriend Dante was worried that Omar had sexual feelings toward them, and he wouldn’t have been concerned about it if they were lesbians.
Now I remember! Cutty slapped the girl – shocked her, shocked me too. That was harsh, maybe because the violence was so personal.
I assumed Kimi and Tosha (Tasha?) were lovers, but I have nothing to base that on.
I wonder how long Omar and Dante’s relationship lasted after Omar saw how long Dante lasted with Mouzone. “I held out as long as I could!” and he’s got what, a cut on his cheek? Humphf. He wasn’t no Brandon.
Just finished rewatching S2 ::sniff:: The van traveled to 5 ports – Wilmington, New Orleans, San Diego, Seattle make 4 – Valchek got a photo of the fifth port but it wasn’t a close-up shot so I don’t know where it was.
I watched the scene where the Towers came down, thinking that was where Poot talked about losing his virginity, but it wasn’t. So I’ll concede 7th grade to 5-4 Fighting.
Until I saw S2 again, I was thinking S3 was my favorite, but now it’s a toss-up. Chris Bauer rocked the role of Frank Sobotka – not a false note anywhere. You’d swear the guy was a working man at some point in his life. Not that actors don’t work, mind ya.
And Ziggy – I had a lot more sympathy for him this time. All he wanted was to be somebody, like his dad. Another thing I picked up on the second time was the almost paternal relationship between Vondas and Nick. Vondas really liked that kid, and stuck his neck out a bit when he told The Greek that Nick wasn’t a threat.
Grade in which Poot lost his virginity: HBO’s episode guide said it was during the scene when the towers were coming down and he was in the seventh grade. Since (i) I didn’t see the specifics anywhere else, (ii) AuntiePam didn’t hear them say it on rewatching the DVD, and (iii) the episode guide occasionally adds detail or gets it wrong, I’m going to split the difference and say in 6th-and-a-half grade.
The thieving, beaten soldier’s girlfriend’s name: Since I can’t find this name referenced anywhere else, I’m going to give this one up and blame the bafflement on (i) and (iii) above. It was Uniqua. I didn’t question it when I found it because I just assumed it was a known name that had floated around before that episode and I’d just missed it.
New, silly, non-plot questions:
What nickname did Oscar, the body-finder, call Freamon?
What color is McNulty’s car?
What is the most unusual thing abou Lester’s appearance?
What beverage did Freamon hear Marlo order?
What compare/contrast statement can be made about the two sets of big, outstanding cases?
What religion was Norm Wilson’s brought up in?
How many vacant murder scenes have been processed?
What real life newpaper reporter was Templeton compared to?
What was Omar referring to with his “just like old times” comment to Rick?
What SDMB-type pet peeve did Haynes evoke as he passed Scott’s latest story on to the slot man?
Who played Hungry Man (I don’t know either)?
Rhonda asked Freamon to serve subpoenas for which case?
What is “Donald”'s real name?
What does the man who delivered the donuts say?
How many donuts did the ex-marine take and what is his name?
