BTW, the reason I brought it up again was that I was just on an 8 person zoom discussing a job candidate who uses they/them. It seemed I heard a variant of “he, I mean they” every 10-15 seconds over the course of the 30 minute meeting, which IMHO distracting from the goal of the meeting which was to determine whether they were qualified for the position. Presumably we’ll get better at it.

That’s actually the best level of apology. One thing I’ve heard several times is that long detailed apologies are annoying, and just draw attention to the thing, and to the person who made the error. Trans/nonbinary people don’t want to be the focus of your self-flagellation. Best to quickly correct yourself without making a fuss, and move on.
