The Wonder of It All - Through the Eyes of a Child

A few weeks ago, I was carrying the Piper Cub down the street to day care. It was a dark morning, with a light snow falling. Street lights were on.

I was just walking along, thinking about work, thinking about this and that, and suddenly the Cub says “Wow!”

He’s looking up at the streetlight, casting its warm yellow glow on a dark world, with great fluffy snowflakes drifting down, catching the light and sparkling.

I looked at him and said, “You’re right! Wow!” Such beauty in the world, and I’d blocked it all out until he saw it, for the first time, and he shared it with me.

That sense of wonder and discovery is so precious, and it goes away so fast, it seems.

Nice story. Thanks.

When I went to the Florida Keys with my son, he always saw things I did not and in ways I did not. I encouraged him to speak up about it. I had more fun when he was there.

I get those moments with my 6 year old nephew. One day we were playing catch, or as I like to call it “please let the ball come into the general direction of uncle Tahssa and not into a window” and a plane flew over head.

He said, “I bet I can hit the plane.” and I said, “That would be really cool if you did.” So he threw the ball up into the air at the plane and when the ball came back down he said,’ Wow the plane is really high." and it made me think about the marvel of powered flight.

So don’t leave us hanging… Did he hit the plane?

“The ball got lost in the sun.”

Why didn’t you catch it when it came down?

“Didn’t you hear me?”
