I went to a bagel place for lunch today. I’m still new to the job and exploring the local lunch places.
Got a ham and cheese bagel. Some yogurt (blueberry). Looking for a drink I spot a display of bottles. You know the sort…small brand…grape soda, orange soda, birch beer…ROOT BEER!!!
Now, as some of you may know (Hi MADs!) I’m a fan of root beer. I’ll take a good non-caffeinated, low carbonation root beer over most any beverage on earth.
So, there it was, ‘Olde Brooklyn Root Beer’. I give it a go.
FHWAH!!!
Ugh, the utter misery inherent in this root beer! Nothing has been seen the like since the black death I feel certain! This is, without a doubt, the worst root beer there has ever been. Bootleg root beers made in Singapore doubtlessly outperform this wretched excuse for a root beer.
It’s name: Olde Brooklyn. Avoid it. It tastes like the skip to yucca root and instead use licorice or cream soda or BOTH(!!!) in the mix.
I would have to taste a bottle to tell you if it really was the worst root beer ever. (Feel free to mail me a couple…) I’ve tasted probably about 30 brands by now and some of them are positively vile. You should avoid one called “Tommyknockers.” Especially the maple variety. It is very, very bad. Some are only mildly bad, but I actually could not finish a bottle of that stuff. I would tell you some of the other stinkers, but I’ve forgotten their names. I recognize them only when I see the label on a shelf somewhere and begin frothing at the mouth and going into seizures as my subconcious mind remembers drinking it. You should avoid any “herbal” root beers at all cost, as well as anything that actually does have licorice in it.
For the record, IBC is my #1 favourite for a mild, non-specialty all-around generic root beer. (I’ve tasted a LOT of root beer.) My local Starbucks carries Thomas Kemper, which I also like, though it has just a little more bite and aftertaste than IBC. The TK Orange Cream Soda is also good… smooth and rich like a melted orange creamsicle.
Undying love for Olde Brooklyn sodas, checking in.
While the root beer isn’t the greatest in the world, their orange and cream sodas are to die for!!! So, don’t knock the whole brand just for the one product.
Anyone else remember when Snapple wasn’t just juices & tea? Root beer! Cream soada! Man, I miss those. Why’d they drop the sodas? The company is named after their apple soda fer chrissakes!
