The Worst Thing About Being Self-Employed

Is that my boss is a bitch. It’s a beautiful sunny day, cold but the good invigorating kind of cold, and she has me inside working because we missed several days of work last week and are seriously behind.

I don’t get sick pay, vacation pay or any benefits. And the worst thing is I’m expected to run the corporate day care center while I’m working! Not to mention the canteen and custodial services.

Yup, she’s a bitch, and I’m a fool for working for her. I’d quit but she hasn’t paid any unemployment insurance for me. :frowning:

I hear ya tater!! Just started my own biz, with a friend, and realized that you can’t just call in sick when you want if you OWN the biz (haven’t had two days off in a row in a long time! Excepting my time in the US, of course…)!!

Hugs to you!!

No, the problem with being self-employed is that when you do call in sice, you know you’re lying. :D:D

No the worst part is that you have to live where you work and stupid fools from downstairs keep ringing your bell asking stupid ass questions and making you lose the writing groove you had just gotten into and when you try to pick up where you left off you can’t and the kids won’t stop watching Pokemon and you’re about to go nuts and so you go to the SDMB to waste time and then the doorbell rings again and it’s the same fool and he hasn’t gotten any smarter!!!

The only good thing about my job is that my boss buys really cool office supplies.

On a more serious note, I always thought the worst part of being self-employed came on April 15th. Not only do you have to send in last year’s tax forms with payment (if you’re a procrastinator) but your quarterly payment for the present year is due the SAME DAY. Ouch, that’s a real kick in the nuts.

:::hangs head in shame::::

I don’t make enough in American money for it to effect our taxes one way or the other, and I, um, get paid under the table for my German work. I’m actually don’t even have a German work permit.

Y’all are going to ostracize me now, aren’t you?

Is seething in raw jealousy the same as ostracism? Not having to deal with quarterly tax payments is nothing but a blessing. Oh sure, if millions were rolling in, I guess I’d find a way to “put up with” the onerous responsibility. But since millions aren’t… I’ll just bitch and moan.

The first thing that popped in to my mind was the taxes, too. Argh.

I asked my mom several years ago why she and her SO didn’t just go ahead and get married. She said the taxes would just be too much of a pain in the arse (he’s self employed). I just said “yeah right, you just like being over 40 and living in sin, don’t you?” She insisted it was the taxes.

Then I married a self-employed musician.

The following tax season, I called my mother to apologize for doubting her. :eek:
