Fascinating…I was just reflecting on similar thoughts. I have a great big box filled with family photos-these pictures span the years 1920-1990 or so. Most of my grandparent’s generation are long dead-my daughter has never met a most of the people in these photos.
Once I am gone, these people will be (almost) totally forgotten.
I said no since I have no children and only one step-grand kid who is three. I doubt I will meet her kids.
However, I have 30 or so cousins and all of us contributed a brief life history and remembrances of our grandparents for a family history. So, I guess I will be remembered by some cousin’s grand kids - but not personally.
I assume my Facebook page will still be around. Everyone will be able to see my final status update which will read, “Feeling a little tingle in my left arm. What the heck is up with that?” to which several friends will reply “LOL” and “ur nutz”. These gems of wit will live on in cyberspace until the last human has turned to dust.
Actual living memories of the physical me? Not a chance.
Assuming my kids have kids in 10 - 15 years.
Assuming I live till I’m 75.
And assuming my grand kids live till they’re 75, then the year will be 2112 and grand kids will most certainly remember me. Besides, kids born in 10 - 15 years will probably have an average lifespan of something like 90. I’ll be remembered till 2127.
I don’t (and it’s looking like I won’t) have children, but I have students. If I retire at the age of 65 (and honestly, I’ll probably be older), that will be in 2041. Someone who was 18 in 2041 will be 89 in 2112; so yes, some of them would probably still be around to remember me. (Whether they will is, of course, another question. Barring Alzheimer’s, I will remember my freshman English professor when I am 89; but he is a very memorable person, and I was a particularly nerdy college freshman.)
I’ve published books and articles that will almost certainly be consulted 100 years from now, if only for historical interest.
Regarding personal knowledge about me, although I have no kids of my own, I’ve led a colorful enough life that I think that my nephews and nieces and their kids will be passing on anecdotes about their “crazy Uncle Colibri” well into the next century.
While I don’t know what they were like as people, through family research I know quite a lot about some of my ancestors who fought in the Civil War.
“Will anyone remember me one year after my death?” --should be in the poll.
This post will be archived on the wayback machine.
There are some places I post online with my real name and plenty of others where I post things that can be linked to me. Not to mention reactions to the same and general talking about me. Hell I even run a forum.
So sure there’ll be SOMETHING about me somewhere, so long as the wayback machine is backed up.
It’ll be a pretty bizarre version of me, but what can ya do
Also I’m hoping that by then we’ve met the technological singularity, and stuff that is written about me will be linked up with my by hypersmart computers. Then again I started a thread on a board I thought was to do with here and what I will call “internet defectives” started linking me with all sorts of weird shit. They did find two threads on other forums that were to do with me (although one was started by a mate) but then decided they were inconsistent or something. Anyhoo, post-singularity I strongly believe that any proper internet presence like that WILL be linked up and there’ll be an awful lot of interesting information about people avaliable, perhaps at different confidence levels too - hell 51% confidence is enough to start looking at cool stuff!
