Theater chains cancelling "The Interview"

So … 44M to make the movie, 46M to pay North Korea to hack themselves so they get the most bizarre marketing campaign ever going.

I don’t get what game North Korea is playing by pretending they’re not behind it (if they were).

Similarly, I’m not sure what game the U.S. is playing by insisting that the Norks did it (if they didn’t).

Dr. Evil takes over the transmission of SNL to school North Korea and Sony pictures:

“They are giving evil organizations a bad name”

“Look, it’s easy to kill a movie, just move it to January”

NY Post is reporting they are going to throw it up on Crackle for free. I guess Sony owns Crackle.

Yay. I hope this is accurate, no release date was posted.

Sony has already denied that they intend to release The Interview on Crackle: http://recode.net/2014/12/21/sony-hasnt-decided-where-to-stream-the-interview-meaning-not-on-crackle-for-now/

Crackle would be a silly option, anyway. Why release it for free instead of on a pay service?

Boost Crackle users? Right now it’s like a distant 4th in streaming options, I think.
Netflix, Amazon, Hulu and then…waaay behind is Crackle.

The Interview is still listed as opening tomorrow at some small theaters near me on Long Island.

I can’t believe no one posted this. After a petition from a group of independent theater owners, Sony plans to open The Interview on Christmas day after all.

I’m sorry. It’s my first real job in the industry and I went for the overkill. Live and learn.

The New York Times offered a reason that they’re not just going to offer it for free, “The studio early on ruled out its own video site, Crackle. That streaming service is free, and Sony has a contractual financial obligation to various profit participants in ‘The Interview’ to exhaust all paid options.” They owe it to others to try to make as much money as possible.

I actually wanted to see it, even before the controversy. Now it looks that the nearest theater showing it is about thirty miles away.

For those familiar with the Hollywood Stock Exchange, the movie went from just over $57 per share to ~$12 in one day. It’s now back up to ~$18 with the news of the limited release and streaming options.

I wonder if any movie has ever dropped that far that fast in the site’s history.

It will be on Google Play and YouTube today at 1 PM. You can rent or buy it there.

If they do release it on a pay service, I hope people don’t rush to watch it. This sort of marketing tactic should not be rewarded.

What sort of marketing tactic, exactly?

I’m usually very cynical around stuff like this, but I honestly don’t think Sony has manufactured any of this controversy for publicity, nor are they focusing on how to make the most money from the situation at this point.

While I do think it would be a nice gesture to offer it to people for free, just as a big “Fuck You” to North Korea, even as a pay-per-view it’d probably pull in much less than the wide theatrical release originally planned.

Great news. I plan to watch it on youtube and pay the money. It’s not really a movie I’d normally watch. But I want to support Sony’s decision in a practical way.

Odd, the Interview isn’t on Youtube’s front page. I searched and found this link.

after the 2 min preview there's a box to click. 5.99 to rent or 14.99 to buy.

I tried and Google Wallet said my service isn’t allowed. Probably because I’m on my work Gmail account. I’ll sign off, clear cookies and start my personal Gmail account. See if I can pay. We’ll just rent it for 30 days.

The Interview is available to be viewed (legally) on youtube for $5.99.
