Theatre People....?

Well, since I’m working on four different shows right now, I guess that would make me a theatre person. I tend to notice, by the way, a difference between musical theatre people and non-musical theatre people.

I was just at a theatre party the other night and remembered why I seldom go to these things–theatre people are often hideously boring if you don’t know them, spend a lot of time establishing who’s “important” to know and who isn’t, play variations of “dueling resumes,” and “perform” (without being entertaining) too much in their real lives.

I love theatre, but sometimes I can’t stand being around “theatre people!”

Bucky

Theatre person here. I started in community theatre when I was four (honest! I had lines!), BA in Drama, did almost-professional theatre for a year after graduation. Havent done too much since then - Ive gotten more into opera and musical revues.

Argh, theatre people… Groan.
Theatre people are, in general, a little too… dramatic, for my tastes. Don’t get me wrong, I’m no philistine. Hell, art is my choosen profession. But theatre people… there’s just something about people who have to be the center of attention…
The sheer joy of being loud. It bugs me.
Give me a nice, quiet, cynical painter/cartoonist any day.
And is it my imagination or are these some of the most manic/dysfunctional people you’ve ever met?
I worked in a theatre props dept for a brief while. Horrible experience.
I’m at the point that I’d sooner get a sharp stick in the eye than see a musical.
Sorry guys, feel free to poo poo geeky, cartoonists.

Amateur theatre type person checking in. I have been approached to appear in some local semi pro productions, but I would have to sing, and that is the one thing I will not do in front of an audience.

Theatre People…?

You rang?

My favorite performer for staying power has to be Milton Berle. He was an actual star wherever he went. Burlesque, Vaudeville, Braodway, Radio, TV, and Movies (my favorite: Can Hyronimous Merkin Ever Forget Mercy Humpp and Find True Happiness, although some prefer It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad World)

And, sexist as it sounds at first, I admire the fact that he scored with dozens of famous women in his day, but he wasn’t a cad- he had fun with women who had dozens of men on their dance cards too.

(Sigh! Remember when lime lights were made of lime?)

Slight typos (I got stagefright, OK?):
Can Hieronymus Merkin Ever Forget Mercy Humppe and Find True Happiness? (1969)
It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World (1963)

And, he was a #1 best selling author in two categories, Humor and Autobiography.

Plus, he scored at both TV variety shows and “Jackpot Bowling Starring Milton Berle” (1960)

What a guy!
