There has been a stick of butter on our microwave for 2 weeks.

The microwave at my workplace, I mean, not my home microwave. I generally don’t allow dairy products to fester in my home for that length of time.

I wouldn’t bother to mention it, if it weren’t for the fact that when I got to work tonight I noticed someone had carefully placed a paper towel beneath it to soak up the grease.

Yep. Instead of throwing the foul thing away, they merely lifted it up long enough to slide a neatly folded paper towel under it.

These people worry me.

Well, they’re probably afraid of throwing someone else’s stuff away and then getting shit about it. Every time we clean out the fridge at work, we throw away mushy, nasty fruit that’s been sitting there for weeks. Invariably, someone comes along the next day, demanding to know what happened to their fruit. They get really pissed about it, too.

There is a Large Refridgerator at my workplace. Big full height double-doored thingy.

People put their food in the Large Refridgerator. Sometimes they leave it there.

The Large Refridgerator gets completely emptied out and cleaned every other friday, no exceptions. If your brand new chicken salad has a big orange sign on it saying, “Don’t throw away! Brand new!” it would still get thrown away.

It is a good Large Refridgerator.

Have you thought about changing to another job?

Guuuuhwujuguyuhuuurgh.

Buttered toast, anyone?

I hear it goes well with Soylant Green. :stuck_out_tongue:

Yuurguluyuhumuhuyurulurgh.

Or another question would be:
Have you thought of throwing the butter away yourself?

Wait…so your telling me they actually took the time to pick the butter up and put a power towel under it, and you actually let it bother you enough to start a thread about it on the internet, yet didnt throw it away?

This stick of butter is having an interesting effect on the lives of many people.

Weird. Do you mean to say that no one at all has used the microwave for 2 weeks? Or if someone is using it, do they take the butter out and put it back in when they are done?
I can’t imagine a workplace microwave going unused for that long, unless your workplace only has a few employees that don’t eat at work.

It’s on the microwave, not in it.

Oh, OK. That makes more sense. There are alot of people who keep butter out like that, there was even a thread here on the SDMB about it. I can’t imagine keeping it out and uncovered, but some folks are OK with that.

Hey Gadfly…you doin’ okay there?

Here’s the thread debating butter storage methods. Lots of people like soft butter, so keeping it out isn’t totally weird. I don’t use enough butter to keep it out, but I have known those who do.

OK, lemme axe you dis:

Is there also a single packet of strawberries ‘n’ creme flavored generic brand Cream of Wheat sitting on top of the microwave too? Since, like, June?

Because, if so, we work at the same place. And you are right: the people here are worrisome.

That’s probably exactly it. I share a house with two other people, and yesterday I finally got around to throwing their soap away. A variety of ten “mostly finished” bars – but each substantial enough that if it were mine I’d continue to use it before starting a new bar. At any given time, I have one bar of soap in the shower. This couple had eleven bars distributed over just about every surface. It took a while for me to realize that the only time they were ever touched was when I moved them to clean the scum from under them. I guess I thought they just liked variety. Yesterday the amount of hair sticking to them, coupled with the observation that many were visibly dusty, finally gave me the confidence to throw the nasty damned things away.

Nobody said anything.

That’s just…strange. As for the OP, even if someone likes their butter soft, uncovered is a bit weird. One day, someone left an unwrapped candy bar in the senior lounge. When I came in the next day, the bar had little teeth marks and nibbles in it!

Ayumuhuguluhuwmnuhutuhmaguhuruluguwurpulyurgh.

i work[ed] at a bakery (today was the last day) and we always kept the butter out, in a rubbermaid, with a piece of wax paper covering it, so it would be out and ready and soft for the customers who wanted their items buttered.

you should decorate the stick of butter. put a sign on it or something, with a toothpick.

I’ve thought of throwing it away a million times, but I dunno…I’ve developed some weird fascination with it. And it hasn’t been used; it’s still wrapped in its little Land O’ Lakes wrapper. I thought butter was a dairy product and it would go sour after a while.

It’s still there tonight, BTW. The paper towel under it is completely saturated with grease. I’m interested to see if someone changes out the paper towel and continues to leave the butter there.

I think this whole situation is demonstrating something significant about human nature. What, I have no idea.

Perhaps I’ll take aaaaaarrgg’s advice and decorate it. I think I still have my son’s old Mr. Potato Head around somewhere…
