There is BLOOD gushing out of my FACE!!!!!!!!

I had my first nosebleed today. Can’t say it was too pleasant of an experience. It’s damn hot today, I woke up with a sore throat and then on top of all that my nose started to feel icky. Didn’t feel runny or stuffy, but it needed to be blown. So naturally, I blew it. Blood came out. That site was unpleasant but, meh, not a big deal. I blew my nose, discarded the tissue, moved on with life… and then few minutes later it happened. Blood starting pouring out. Yee-ikes! There was BLOOD flowing from my FACE! In massive volumes! Foolishly I grabbed a tissue thinking it would last more than .00001s. That poor damn tissue didn’t stand a snowball’s chance in hell. I moved on to a towel and stood helplessly while blood come oozing out of my face by the liter. I just watched it drain and drain and drain until eventually the deluge of blood stopped running from my nose. I now have a moist red towel as a souvenir of my very first nose bleed. Good times.

It was an unpleasant sight as well.

While blood came oozing out. Gah! I’m going to start proofreading one of these days, I swear!

Geez, if that’s what it does to you, remind me never to play Literati with you. Did your brain explode?

Hardy har. I played 3 or 4 games and won all of them. Kicked QED’s ass.

After losing litres of blood, where you shocked? Awed? Shocked and awed? Will it be the next vampire soft drink?

How’d you manage to go so long? Perhaps it’s the dry winters here, but if I didn’t get a half-dozen a year, I’d think that strange.
Did you save the tissues? They count as 1/2 a donation at the blood bank.

I bow to you.

Glad you no longer have a nosebleed, right?

You happen to need more asses to kick in Literati?

yuck

The blood is LIFE!

All of the above.

Nan, no idea how I managed to avoid one. Nosebleeds weren’t uncommon in elementary school, and strangely enough, I never got one. Looks like I made up for a coupla decades earlier today. I shed enough blood to donate to 9 different fully grown adults.

Hey, lel, if you wanna play, send me an e-mail. And yes, the nosebleed is gone. For now.

I don’t remember the last time I had a nose bleed that wasn’t brought on by someone hitting me hard in the nose. There was this one kid in my high school that had a history of them. I remember talking to him one day, and in mid sentance, his nose just started gushing.

it was really creepy.

So, just out of curiosity, MeanOldLady, if you unfold the towel, does it make a picture?

Welcome to Coldfire’s childhood, 1973-1989. I used to have nosebleeds ALL the time. At one point, the doctor was contemplating to scorch one of the vains in my nose (if I express this poorly, it’s my translation skills. It’s a common procedure). Never went ahead with that, though.

One time, I had one that lasted an hour and a half. Only later did I find out that when a nose bleed lasts more than half an hour (pay attention, MOL!), you need to get your ass to the emergency room, because you’re likely losing too much blood. I sure did feel shaky after that 1.5 hour one.

If memory serves, you are supposed to tilt your head forwards to stop the nosebleed, right? “Because if you tilt your head back, it just encourages the bleeding to continue,” is the answer I got when I asked why.

I used to get them too, I always tilted my head forwards, but some of my friend’s moms would make me sit down with my head tilted back. I think the idea is to encourage a clot to form so the bleeding will stop, and a forward tilt works best for this.

Peroxide works on light colored cotton materials to get out blood stains btw.

Glad the nose bleed stopped. Comforts MOL

Zabali_Clawbane, you tip your head forward so if blood pools in the nose, it doesn’t drip back and choke you.

Coldfire, it’s cauterization. I had it done to a vein in my nose which would often bleed in the winter (all that dry air). Worst part about it was the smell of burning flesh. Of course, being in my nose, the odor was unescapable.

MOL, what’s the big deal, don’t you bleed for longer every month or so? Kidding, bummer about the nose bleed. Glad it stopped. I find that putting some vaseline up your nose (applied with a Q-tip) before bed helps keep the nasal cavity moist and blood-free (note: Don’t know if this is “medically” acceptable but I haven’t had problems with it).

Yeah, that’s right. At the least, the blood can make you queasy. I remember being queasy after my friends mom made me sit with my head tilted back to stop a nosebleed. The blood just flowed down the back of my throat, into my stomach. Ick!

Mmmm…mmmm…mmmm…mmmm…Good!

El Elvis Rojo, I threw the towel away. It was too painful to look at.

Good Jiminy, Coldfire, 1hr30?! Mine lasted no time at all. A minute, maybe? If that. I exaggerated just a little about the “massive volumes” and the blood gushing “by the liter.” There was a lot of it though. Enough to soak a small towel, anyway.

And thankies, Zabali. I’m just fine and dandy now, but it was a bit disturbing to watch blood come rushing out of my face even though it was painless.

Fin_man, I’ll try that. Never had a nosebleed in all my years, but now I’m scared pissless. I’ll do anything I can to prevent another one.

And now back to work.

Productivity and the SDMB don’t mix. Grr.

Indeed, the only reason given by the Red Cross for leaning forward is to prevent swallowing blood. That doesn’t bother me at all, so I tilt my head back, which reduces the amount of blood dripping on my clothes, my counters, my papers, etc. I find that the old “Kleenex up the nose” trick works very well, too.

I get nosebleeds during dry weather, both winter and summer, but not as often as I did when I was a child. I got my nasal veins cauterized once, I’m told, but I don’t remember it, and it doesn’t seem to have accomplished anything.

MeanOldLady, do you have a theory on what may have caused your nosebleed? Er… were you having a problem with dry nasal passages as others have indicated?

I ask because my mom would occasionally get sudden, copious nosebleeds… when her blood pressure would spike. I think that may be how she and her doctor discovered her problems with hypertension.

Not trying to freak you out, but maybe think about seeing your doctor?
