There's a huge market crash. You've got 48 hours - what do you stock up on?

Ok, serious question here. Just being prepared - what would everyone suggest a family of four stock up on in case we head into 1930’s territory?

What, how much, and for how long?

Any good websites/reading material on this?

Thanks,

~Libre

How would a stock market crash equal an apocalypse?

Go back and read the Y2K nutjobs suggestions. I’m sure some of them are still out there.

A lozenge, a nickel, and a wish.

And a jet-ski.

Ammo and TP. Ya really don’t want to run out of either one. And, in the event the Ragnorak and Roll thing doesn’t happen, you’ll have spent your money on useful things.

Bullion. And some scales.

Valete,
Vox Imperatoris

Whiskey.

Campion…aren’t you the lady lawyer I was sorta less than charming to last time I was here? I’m sorry for that by the way.

Ya like whiskey, huh?

Cheers, Counselor.

Ammo, food, and water. I would choose whiskey, but Campion’s got that covered, and I have the ammo.

I’m a contrarian. I can has Exxon for $3/share?

Yeah, the financial market taking a beating is not equivalent to the Apocalypse.

Lehman Brothers going down does not mean that the supermarket will stop selling food.

I’d stock up on VFINX.

A good stock of non-perishable foods, such as canned goods, cereals, dried fruits, nuts, cereal bars/energy bars.

A first-aid kit.

Bottled water. A few gallons per person.

Basic tools, like a manual can opener, scissors, death ray. Stuff you probably already have around the house.

Some extra pet food if you have pets.

You might also look into getting a generator. They can come in quite handy.

It’s always a good idea to have stuff like that in the house in case of any kind of emergency, but don’t go overboard. We’ve got a good four years until The Apocalypse.

AAPL

Make sure it’s a zinc lozenge, those nuclear bombs will really F up your throat

You obviously don’t live in NY state.

You should ALWAYS have a good stock of ammo. That way, if the apocalypse sneaks up on you, you can easily make good on whatever other necessities you lack.

I’d buy shares of Berkshire Hathaway. The good stuff. A-class.

Stock. It’s on sale. Most of it won’t spoil, and it will appreciate very nicely.

EDIT: I see I’m not the only one!

Hats. People in the 1930s always wore hats. No matter how dire their circumstances.

Cash and traveler’s checks. They may be out of favor now, but they’re still a secure way to hold a cash-equivalent.

And along with the staples of food, water, TP, soap, and ammo, don’t forget guns, parts, a repair kit, duct tape & gaffer tape, and low-tech weapons.

Plus a large supply of yeast and honey. Fruits will go bad, grain needs to be eaten as bread, but honey does not spoil and can be used to make booze.
