There's a reason it's called Good Friday...

Way back in December, I ate some bad chicken and promply spent the next 24 hours in the bathroom, and the next 24 hours in a state of more-or-less constant dizziness. The dizziness was getting to me, so I broke down and saw a doctor for the first time in quite a few years.

Well, the doc tells me I have high blood pressure (170/100), and prescribes some meds. She then asked me when my last physical was – IIRC, it was in 1981. Over the intervening years, I’d gone to urgent care for minor issues, but never had a regular doctor, as I’ve always been quite healthy.

So we schedule a full exam for January. During that exam, the doctor picked up a heart murmur. Since my mom’s family has a long history of heart disease, she refers me to a cardiologist. The cardiologist recommends ultrasound & a stress test, again based solely on family history – there’s no real evidence of anything wrong at this point.

The stress test showed a possible blockage – however, the results were inconclusive, as the diaphragm sometimes casts a shadow on the scans that looks like a blockage. So the cardiologist recommends cardiac catheterization, which was performed on Good Friday. The cath revealed a 90% blockage of the LAD artery, which was treated with angioplasty and a stent. I got out of hospital last night, and expect to return to work on Tuesday.

Chances are pretty good that if I hadn’t gotten food poisoning back in December, we wouldn’t have caught this blockage until I had a heart attack. So it turned out to be a very Good Friday in spite of having to spend the day in the hospital.

That’s why I hate going to doctors. They are always delivering bad news and expecting me to do something about it.

Well, hopefully you remember what good going for a regular checkup can do for you, just like Christians remember what good Jesus dying on the cross did for them

My uncle had a valve repaired on Friday, and he made the joke that he died on Good Friday just like Jesus (they stopped his heart momentarily). I told him he’s much more proficient than Jesus as it only took him a few minutes to come back to life as opposed to a few days. heh

Well, it looks like somebody just got his ticket to Hell punched! Ok, that was funny.

3waygeek glad everything’s ok. I’ll be keepin’ you in my thoughts and prayers.

My father, in 1983, had a heart attack on Holy Saturday. On Easter Sunday they had to revive him, a code blue. He’s fine now, but said if he’d died he couldn’t think of a better day to go.

3waygeek, I’m glad you are OK! Thank God,(literally) for modern medicine. That’s why we still have you as a poster, and I have a father.

But now you are in the clutches of the doctors, and they will probably insist you start coming in for regular checkups!
