OK, so I have an iPod Touch. There are apps for it. But what do I want? What do I need?
Good question! What do you want? What do you need?
I googled lists of the best apps, downloaded the free ones, considered the paid ones, and it was easy to judge which ones I ultimately used and which ones I didn’t.
Maybe I under use my phone. because most of the apps and features I use all the time are built in (like maps, alarm clock, checking my email, using the iPod, non-stop texting). The only paid one I really use is a Soduko, and I use that one every day.
Well, I got the Seattle sectional chart and the AOPA airports. Then I picked up some language apps, since my German is rusty and my Japanese has all but disappeared. After spending time with my friend and his wife, I thought I should get a Spanish app too. I tried the German, and it’s really not useful as the app I got is just vocabulary words.
The ones that get the most use on my iPhone:
ABC News
USA Today
Huffington Post
At Bat 2009
Pocket God
IMovies
StarDefense
Plus a couple of CityGuides. It’s really up to you. What do you need the most?
That’s the thing. I’ve gotten along OK without apps all my life, so now I don’t know what I want or need – with an iPod Touch. The various flight instruments are intriguing, but they work with an iPhone, which I don’t have. The most useful things to me would be navigation-type stuff, but a lot of the time I’m not near a WiFi hotspot.
I should add that I also use Flixster all the time. My husband and I go to the movies A LOT, and we were constantly driving around going “I thought that YOU were going to check the movie listings before we left” or “You JUST mentioned going to the movies - why on earth do you think I’d have the weeks listings IN MY HEAD”.
Being able to check move listings has enhanced my marriage. That, and maps. “You’ve lived here longer - I thought YOU’D know where this address is”, “Uh, what makes you think I know every single address in the city?”
Yup. Marriage-saver apps.

It depends on what kind of person you are, IMHO. For me, I have a few games that were cheap or free (Get Pocket God to amuse yourself to no end, for only $1 and frequent updates!).
Now myself, I’m an engineering student who does work with computers, electronics, etc. So for me having utilities is a great use for the iPod Touch. TouchTerm is wonderful for anybody working with or who wants to use SSH. GraphCalc is awesome because it can do simple differential equation graphing easily, LabTimer is just a timer program with the added advantage of having four simultaneous timers going at once… and Quick Graph is just fun to play with, it’s an app that can do 3d graphing. Useful if you have to take any 3d Calculus courses. Also I would recommend picking up the AIM app, a game called “Flood-It!”, and if you do VNC there’s an app for that, too.
