There's gonna be a new Doper in Tallahassee!

On November 1st, I’m moving down to Tallahassee from Myrtle Beach!

So any Tallydopes who feel inclined, I would love as much info as possible. SouthernStyle? MuffinMan? Tally-Ho? et.al.? What’s it like? I’ve never been there, and I know one person (who got me my job). Traffic? Crime? Things to do? Gimme the Straight Dope.

I’m going down there the weekend of the 20th to look for a place to live. Anyone wanna do lunch?

Once I get settled in, I hope to host an imprompu dopefest with those I know live there.

Congrats, blessedwolf!

StraightDope on Tallahassee… well, I’ll give you a sample.

Traffic: The #1 complaint around here. Back in Tallahassee’s early days the town designers gave the road grid a wagon wheel shape. They never counted on everybody living out on the spokes and working at the hub. So rush hour doesn’t rush it crawls but hey, it could be worse.

Crime: #2 issue, but not a real problem. We got the drugs, burgleries, rapes, etc normally associated with have two large colleges in town. Two days ago we had out 7th murder of the year so you can see we real high on the national average.

Where to live: Avoid campuses and Frenchtown. The well-to-do and nearly so live in the NE area but there is a brand new community going up in the SE you may want to look into if you’d like to buy. Renting is expensive here because of the number of college kids.

What to do: For anything alcohol related the “Tennessee Strip” is a large grouping of bars and clubs near campus. There are others scattered around town. We have the usual movies, theatre, shopping, parks, museums, etc. but nothing extra special.

Despite being the capital and having FSU and FAMU, Tallahassee still considers itself a small town. We have your small town fun, small town paper, and small town problems. If that atmosphere is what you’d like, then welcome home.

It could be Myrtle Beach traffic (what I’m used to): 72 sq. miles of town: at most 2 miles wide between the ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway. 2 roads to take. Lots o’ tourists.

It don’t get much worse than that.

I’ve got a few leads on places. They’re cheaper than they are here! (plus with no State Tax, I’ll be making mo’ money)

Actually the paper’s not thatsmall…that’s the job I got. But the small-town atmosphere is what I want. I grew up in Chapel Hill, NC, and despite the annoying qualities of many college kids, I do kind of miss that atmosphere.

Thanks!

You’re going to work for the Dem? Cool!
I didn’t mean to sound insulting to the Democrat, I like it a lot. My two favorite columns are “The Traffic Doctor” and “Miscellania”. Ron and Janie were a big help when I lost my cat, Oreo, earlier this year.

Small town filled with college students, yep, that’s us.
Sounds like you’ll fit right in, blessedwolf

Actually, I know very little about the paper. I’m in advertising design. With the paper here, I just read the Comics, Abby & the Police Blotter. I expect it’ll be the same there.

So I take it you found your cat. <whew!> I know that if I lost either of mine, it would make me insane.

Is there a lot of drinking there?
The main reason I ask is that in Myrtle Beach, there are only really four things to do: go to the beach (which I do rarely), drink (which I do sparingly), Play golf (which I’ll do when hell freezes over) and go to strip clubs (which, at 31, I am happy to say I have never been to).

I know that there’s no beach there (but lots of lakes–cool!), I don’t know (or really care) about the golf courses, and I’ve heard that there are no strip clubs.

I’ll assume that it’s a heavy-drinking town. Just as long as that’s not the ONLY thing to do at night.

I just got back this evening from checking Tally out–what a great city!!! I found myself a place about 10 minutes from the Capitol–decent apartment, nothing to brag about, and I’m moving in on either the 1st or the 2nd. As soon as I get my first paycheck from the Dem., All Tallahassee Dopers are invited to my place for Margaritas!
