They are blasting a foundation nearby, and my dog is freaked out. Vets? Techs? HELP?

Hi…

I think I’ve gone through my list of “things to try”.

I need feedback, input, whatever.

My older dog, Valen, has been freaking out lately. It’s been difficult for me to figure out the source of his freakouts. He sits, panting, whining, being jumpy. He wants to go out and stay outside…

When we go for our walks to playgroup, he’s fine. He eats his treats and plays with the others. He seems to be perfectly healthy. We get home, and he starts the whole “stressed dog” routine all over again.

He has always been good about me leaving the house. Lately, he refuses to let me go - doesn’t want to be in my room (where he usually stays), while the puppy is crated. The pup seems perfectly fine.

Then, I realised what was going on. Across the street from me, they are BLASTING for a new foundation for a highrise. My dog is fine in the morning until he hears the three whistle blows… and then the final blow a few minutes later. The whole building SHAKES. Not a little shake, I mean SHAKES big time. Our landlord is even afraid it might affect the stability of our foundation. They’ve been blasting for a week now, about 5 times a day. Often when I’m not home.

THIS is what has been freaking my old guy out. He won’t eat his food if I’m not there, won’t even eat a fresh bone! Nothing! NADA! This is so unlike him…

Now, we are heading out to MN tomorrow, so he will be out of that setting and will stop freaking out. What could I give the old guy to calm down his nerves so he’s ready for his flight out tomorrow? He needs to rest! To be calm! ACK!

I’ve been thinking of getting another bottle of Rescue Remedy and giving him some before I go run errands this afternoon… it usually works… Any other suggestions? ANYTHING at all?

Valerian? Melatonin? Some Valium? Can he stay at a friend’s house while you are gone?

Poor pup - we went through a period of blasting for the new building that is being constructed right next to the one where I work. We couldn’t hear the warning siren in here, so the blasts always came as a surprise. Everyone in the office would gasp. So I can completely understand why he’s freaked.

I would suggest the rescue remedy. Something to take the edge off. You’ll also probably want to give him some while you’re flying, and after you get to Minnesota, he’ll probably be pretty stressed by the whole thing. It’s only for a day, and then it’s all over.

Tell Duffman to relax for me, but don’t tell him that he’s getting a bath today, hee hee! Oh boy! Wet dog! This should be fun!

Would it be possible to take him out of the house with you as much as possible today ? A long walk/drive maybe at least until 5 PM ?
