The clue was that the Bundy one took place in winter in the bird sanctuary (or was it for the birds?
), the mad poster was referring to the summer protests that were related to police brutality.
Yeah I figured that out on a second read. I usually make an assumption of sanity until I pay closer attention.
It’s like you assume someone is wearing pants at first, then you look closer and realize they’ve only painted themselves below the waist.
I was was watching NewsNation on WGN America last night; one of their commentators put forth a suggestion that the Never-Trumpers who have yet to switch parties should try making a third major party – the Conservative Party. That commentator also recognized how the proposed party would have trouble getting traction without MAGA.
They would have to be willing to sacrifice the country to libs for at least 2 (and probably 4) years, but the country would survive it and get some welfare to boot. Five years, they’d be able to fix MAGA, let the middle class grow a little, and then have another Reagan clone talk about how government is the problem again.
I don’t see this happening, but this is the prescription as I see it.
McConnell would have to count himself in that group.
I understand what you’re saying but my disagreement is the cause. I think we all agree that the violence in any of the protests is wrong but the summer protests had a legitimate grievance that was not being addressed by the politicians. Protest was one of the few ways they could voice that grievance.
Yesterday’s protest was a bunch of whiners spurred on by the king of whiners, using made up facts. Their grievance was that they lost at the polls. Their cause was not legitimate.
I would say that the intent is also vastly different.
The protesters over the summer intended for peaceful protests, and unfortunately, and against the desires and wishes of the organizers, there was some violence and some destruction of property.
The insurrectionists at the Capitol came for the purpose of breaking into the Capitol, and at the very least disrupting the proceedings, given that some were armed and some were carrying bondage implements, as well as posts on social media about hanging, guillotining, or otherwise executing lawmakers, they intended to do far more.
I have long thought the Republican Party should be outlawed, much as Germany has done to the Nazi Party. Don’t talk shit to me about “good” Republicans. There ARE no good Republicans. They’re like the “good” German Nazi Party members who were regular Joes (regular Johanns?) and felt they were expected to belong, all the while ignoring the atrocities.
Every single member of the Republican Party is am American traitor. Every single one.
In fact there is a beautiful counter example to his dumbshit both-sides-ing.
The Seattle police deliberately abandoned their Capitol Hill precinct building and left the doors open. They claimed it was because of escalated risk and a strategic withdrawal, but it was actually a honeypot invitation, a temptation to the protesters to invade and torch it so the police could have shocking TV footage justifying their re-entry in thuggish force. But the protesters, who were neither mindlessly stupid nor willfully destructive, simply boarded it up from the outside and set it as off limits. This was endlessly frustrating for the police; they assumed they were making a temporary retreat, and they’d be going back in with guns blazing after a day or two after the “rioters” gave them just cause. But that didn’t happen, so the building stood quiet and empty for weeks.
There you go. The clear distinction. And the both-sides-ers can eat a big bowl of shit.
The Republican party was coopted by Trump, and Trump lead them to do his bidding and became Trump’s Insurrection party under the control of Trump, not themselves. Basically Trump took them over, which is a very dangerous thing for our democracy as our rights as citizens depend on the checks and balances which Trump was quickly coopting under his control.
However that spell of control appears to be broken - maybe. If the Republicans go back to the party they were, then they will be what they were, though they would need to overwhelming reject Trump (which it appears they are), stand together on that.
It appears and makes sense that many republican leaders didn’t like Trump and wanted him out, however didn’t have the opportunity to publicly support that position till now, which many are mostly united in that effort.
Yet the RNC still absolutely supports Trump. They just had their meeting and re-elected Trumpyphants Ronna McDaniel and Tommy Hicks. They also cheered mightily when he called in. The Republicans are nowhere near done with Trump, they still support him. And that, hopefully, will continue to be their downfall.
No, I think this is very plausible. Voters have short memories, and ‘grass is greener’ syndrome kicks in. Repubs will rebrand and come back, maybe even by 2024, but I’d be willing to bet for sure in 2028 if Dems hold the White House for 8 years. I remember towards the end of the W admin, after the fuckups of Katrina and the economy in shambles, some talking heads were saying things like “the Republican Party has lost the voting public for a generation or more”. But 8 years later, after the Obama Admin fixes the economic ruin of the previous admin and things were relatively sane, here come the Repubs again. And putting aside trump’s full-on racist policies, there were also the same old cries of “small government! Deregulation!” Which is what led to the Great Recession of 2008. The Volcker Act, put in place by the Obama Admin to try to prevent another subprime loan fiasco, which led to the 2008 recession, ever again? In the trump admin, “it’s holding back the economy— repeal it!” The same old failed Repub policies keep getting repeated due to short memories.
I hope our collective memories are at least longer for the toxic, hateful, racist aspects of trumpism in order to prevent repeating those, but I’m not optimistic.
That is a good distinction, as are the other ones above, concerning the justness of their cause and the intentions of the large majority of the protestors.
It’s also true that in Portland, small numbers of protestors broke into the Justice center, ran around and set some wastebasket fires, and at one point barricaded the doors of a police station with people inside and were setting a fire outside. Both of those instances were awful attacks on public buildings that put people in danger. And we should not sent that they happened.
But, the vast majority of protestors decried those actions. The tiny proportion of protestors who did it were repeatedly told they were not helping, and not welcome by BLM leaders. They were not a core part of BLM, but rather fringe people who took advantage of the opportunity.
So, we can’t claim that there were no dangerous attacks on public buildings during the Portland protests. But there are plenty of legitimate distinctions to be drawn that refute the greater bothsidesism claim.
Nah. I mean, yes, but no. Trump hijacked the GOP from the establishment, but it was ripe for the picking. In the last few decades, the GOP became the party of anti-intellectualism, the party of hatred and destruction, the party that makes up its own facts – to the point of needing its own news channel – and the party of deliberate cruelty and authoritarianism. What’s the current percentage of Republicans who approve of the invasion of the Capitol building? Last I saw it was like, 40%.
Even if the establishment GOP people are willing to go back to repudiating Trump, they still have a big chunk of their membership embracing him, and even if not him, continuing to embrace authoritarianism and hate and cruelty, and white grievance and white supremacy, because they set themselves up that way. Even if Trump himself is rejected, they are stuck with that 40%. And they recruited those assholes.
It’s not going to be something they can just undo by rejecting Trump.
Personally, I think I will refer to all who voted to reject electoral votes as being part of the Party of Sedition.
It works on so many levels. For instance, Ted Cruz (POS) is already trying to distance himself from Trump and saying he stood up to Trump for the last 4 years.
Josh Hawley (POS) thought he was holding a chocolate cupcake with a sparkler in it when he rode to Trumps defence, no doubt picturing a position of prominence for himself in the 1000 minute Reich. What he actually had in his hand was a stick of dynamite in a pile of shit. He was holding said shit when it blew and he is so covered that his political career is all but over.
Ted Cruz (POS), Cindy Hyde-Smith (POS), Roger Marshall (POS) and Tommy Tuberville (POS) are all flecked with enough shit that censure is probably the best outcome they can hope for.
I honestly SAW “Party Of Sedition” in your first paragraph, but I kept reading (POS) as “Piece Of Shit.”
Understandable, I suppose.
Working as intended, says I.
