They didn't bury him so much as send him out on tour.

What the heck are they thinking?

Good lord!

And with all due respect, the man was not elected, didn’t serve a complete term, and pardoned the tricky bugger who handed him his job.

Not to mention that during his short term he managed to trip or fall down quite regularly.

Damn, the man’s been dead like a week now.

I was pretty patient and understanding I think, but I swear I thought yesterdays proceedings were finally the end. I couldn’t believe there was more on the TV this afternoon.

I’m just saying, I’m not going to be surprised if the buggers on The Daily Show tomorrow!

Gerald Ford was one of my favorite presidents. The fact that he wasn’t elected to the office also meant that he wasn’t afflicted with the attributes needed to make a successful run for the presidency in the modern age.

Actually, Ford was the only Republican I ever voted for (when he ran against Carter).

He didn’t trip or fall down that much. Media just made a big deal of it.

But yeah, the three-states-plus-D.C. circuit did seem unusual.

Current thread on this topic.

And to continue on what Rilchiam said, he was the best athlete ever elected to office. I forget who it was, but one reporter asked him semi-recently if he hated/resented Chevy Chase for the bumbling characterization, and apparently he took it in good stride.

Er, by “office” I meant “the office,” the American presidency. :smack:

Yep, I haven’t seen a dead guy dragged around this much since “Weekend at Bernie’s”. Never mind what kind of president he was … just give the poor man his eternal rest, already!

Sorry I thought this thread was about Payne Stewart.

Thank goodness you prefaced that with “with all due respect.”

That said, I have to agree. I thought by the time they got back to Grand Rapids they should have printed up tour T-shirts. But really my concern was more for his familly. Frankly, I don’t think I would like a six-day extended funeral for a close loved one; talk about an ordeal. I can only imagine his sons and daughters went home, took off the suit (finally), and had a stiff drink. (Ha! Stiff drink! Sorry.)

I think it was all planned in advance, though…he wanted to be buried in Michigan, they had to have a service in Palm Springs, since they had lived there so long (my parents live right off of Gerald Ford Drive there!), and of course they had to do the Washington thing. I totally agree that I would not have wanted to go through all that, especially if I were Betty (she’s starting to look a little feeble herself!), but I imagine these were his wishes.
