So buddy lives in New York and finds this bizarre insect in his backyard which is unlike anything he’s ever seen, and unlike anything I’ve ever seen as well. And we’re looking for answers, and I have the thought: The Straight Dope Forum knows.

Alien scout? Beatle/moth love-child?

I am more of an etymologist than an entomologist, but I believe that is a dobsonfly with a broken mandible.

I agree. Definitely a dobsonfly.

I expect its mother loves it, but sheesh, that’s an ugly critter.
