I guess the other possibility is that The Second Stone believes that if you use certain words, you are automatically a cryptofascist racist. It doesn’t matter what you’re saying or the context of your statement - including quoting someone else, even! - if you use the magic words, that’s it. This is all kinds of hyperstupid. In fact it’s much dumber than just failing to understand sarcasm.
I wish I could make a table. Put the following four statements into a table: 1a and 1b are in the first row, and 2a and 2b are in the second row. Label the columns “sarcastic” and “straightforward,” such that 1a and 2a are sarcastic, and 1b and 2b are straightforward. Label the rows “racist” and “nonracist” such that 1a and 1b are racist, and 2a and 2b are nonracist.
Note that typing some of these statements makes me feel revolting, and I do not endorse them, but offer them by way of an example.
1a [sarcastic, racist] Oh, sure, all we need to do to decrease crime rates is to give black people better houses, and then they’ll magically stop killing each other and selling crack! Go liberal government!
1b [straightforward, racist]: Black people are inherently violent. Public housing will do nothing to decrease their violent nature.
2a [sarcastic, nonracist] Yeah, crime in public housing is entirely a problem of black people being inherently violent. It has nothing at all to do with public policies that deliberately forced black people into ghettos and prevented them from joining the middle class.
2b [straightforward, nonracist] While improving housing options for black people won’t be a panacea, it’d be one small step toward remedying an historic injustice, and in so doing we may find fewer black youth feel alienated from our society.
Notice something: 1a [sarcastic, racist] sounds very similar to 2b [straightforward, nonracist]. 2a [sarcastic, nonracist] sounds very similar to 1b [straightforward, racist].
Got that?
So when someone says something that superficially sounds racist, but they’re being sarcastic, that’s because they mean the opposite of what they’re superficially saying: they’re meaning the opposite of the racist thing.
And when someone says something the superficially sounds non-racist, but they’re being sarcastic, they also mean the opposite of what they’re saying: they mean something racist thereby.
Got that?
Second Stone, you don’t have a lot of face-saving options here. Sticking to your guns on this is not saving face. Claiming you have no interest in saving face is not saving face.
The only chance you have of saving face here is to show the courage to admit you misunderstood. You’ll still get mocked for it, because Jesus goddamned Christ. But nothing else will come close to having you come out of this with a shred of dignity.
Why do you think these facts necessarily mean you (or your OP) are not racist? Marrying a Japanese woman or filling out forms don’t prevent you from being racist.
No but they do give strong evidence that someone doesn’t believe in an Aryan nation.
The word on the street is that you guizot and Second Stone are deep cover racists trying to infiltrate this board. I have seen quotes by Second Stone in particular that tried to promote the ideas that racism is endemic to most people if only it can be uncovered.
We don’t know what you are talking about and wonder why you are reacting so strongly on this topic. Honestly, it is like a bunch of Republicans protesting an all male fashion show in San Francisco because of the queers. They definitely want attention but not in the way they advertise.
Second Stone, prove to us in one paragraph or less why we shouldn’t consider you the biggest racist of all. You are obsessed with the topic for some reason. You don’t have to make projections based on your own situation and take it out on innocent people. We can help you work through it.
That’s not sarcasm. However, the fact that you think it demonstrates that you understand sarcasm, while in fact it is further proof that you do not, is kind of ironic.
If a person makes racist statements dripping with sarcasm, or not dripping with sarcasm, the statements are racist and unwelcome. Fascist (crypto or otherwise) is something different than racist. They may overlap and they may not. I have not called you a fascist in this thread, I see no evidence.
I too, wish you could make a table. If I were to wish to “face-save”, I suppose I could just do what Marley did and say I was being sarcastic and you guys are wise and knowledgeable to see that and have an impaired sense of irony. Go back and read my posts, they are entirely consistent with being sarcastic, aren’t they? Sarcasm is a pass to say anything.
Now, I want to be clear that I am not being sarcastic in this thread. I leave that to the people who sarcastically speak out of both sides of their mouths.
All right. You’re too much of a dumb-ass to bother with anymore. Except now I really do want to know: Do you think Stephen Colbert is a conservative?
No, never did. But I also followed him when he and Carell were doing Even Steven on TDS. But I thought that I was too much of a dumb-ass to bother with anymore. Then you ask me a question. Which part of your post is sarcastic? The part where you think Colbert is a conservative, or the part where you are too smart to argue with a dumb-ass?
I may have missed it on all of this - The Second Stone, exactly what is it that you are considering to be racist?
Because if I can actually share my home, my bed, my wealth and my life with someone of a different race born in a different country, then maybe I’m not the xenophobe/racist/bigot that some here have made me out to be. No one can prove to another what thoughts run through his head, but I thought that that might be taken as pretty strong evidence.
As to the filling out of forms…it goes to what I expressed upthread: although I disapprove of illegal immigration, I approve of legal immigration. A real racist /bigot worthy of the name would be opposed to all immigration.
Using the words, “illegal alien,” is what he is accusing Marley of doing… indicating that this choice of words makes Marley a racist.
Marley’s choice of words in post 10 (which is dripping with sarcastic hyperbole) is his evidence of racism.
Agreeing with the OP. See posts 10 and 30. The OP is racist and agreeing with a racist statement is racist. As you can see, I’ve gotten flack because people think that post 10 is being sarcastic and they apparently believe that you can publicly agree with racists statements as long as you claim you are being sarcastic. I don’t think that posts 10 (or 30) are being sarcastic, or even if post 10 is sarcastic (which I don’t think) that it is a sufficient excuse for being racist. The counter argument to that is my failure to recognize or excuse the really rude statement as sarcasm makes me stupid, an idiot and a moron, etc.
There is huge shame attached to whichever side you disagree with in this argument, to which I have suggested (as a further argument and not seriously) that if it is me, then perhaps I was just being sarcastic all along. Which I’m not.
At this point you should be up to date and the thread continues to see how long Marley & Friends will, in front of other, argue with an idiot. Can you now tell the difference? Me neither.
No, actually, they all have green cards. Strings were pulled . . .
It’s just too perverse for me to stop trying.
Do you really not understand? He didn’t agree with the OP. His “I agree” was a joke; he actually feels the exact opposite. Colbert is really the best example, since you’ve admitted to watching him. You know how he will often espouse an extreme right-wing position in order to make fun of it? His beliefs are 180 degrees from what he’s saying. That’s what Marley was doing. Quite blatantly, and evident to every single person in this thread but you, including the OP, whom he was mocking. I don’t know that I can put it much more plainly. Your obtuseness on the matter was humorous for a bit, but now it’s just kind of sad. Oh, nothing sarcastic in this post, BTW. Nod or drool if you have even the vaguest concept of what’s being explained.
Nod. But I don’t agree.
What if the statements are made in opposition to a racist viewpoint? I consider that welcome. And again, “illegal aliens” isn’t a racist term - doubly so if you’re quoting someone else saying it. I did defend the OP against the racism accusation and I am not sure if I was right, but I said nothing racist myself. As proof, I’ll point out again that you initially attacked me for something I didn’t say.
So we can add “poor memory” and (worse) and “uses terms like Nazi and fascist so cheaply that he can’t remember if he’s said them or not” to your list of mental shortcomings:
Dear Stupid, please explain how it’s possible for me to have meant post 10 seriously when I’m an atheist.
From 2003.
I’m an atheist
From this thread.
“I’ve chained myself to this ‘Marley is a racist’ anchor, and by God I’m going down with it!” <plunk>
Sometimes jokes are utterly inappropriate. This was one such instance if you were joking. And the therm “illegal aliens” is certainly racist. It means criminal non-humans to the Limbaugh crowd. You’ve acknowledged that this might be the case in other posts in this thread (that it might be dehumanizing). In the terms of the OP, there isn’t “might”, it is intended and demanded to be used because it is dehumanizing and begs the question as a matter of insisted definition.
Dear Racist: I could care less that you are an atheist. Your religious views or lack thereof have nothing to do with anything here. I don’t keep track of your views on theism. I do keep track of Der Tris, Polycarp and Tomndebb’s theism views. I was raised by an atheist. When he said “goddamnit” or “Jesus Christ” he meant it. So atheists certainly can invoke God with serious or non-serious intent. Abraham Lincoln was most certainly an atheist (accordingly to Herndon whose evidence I consider definitive for Lincoln’s time prior to the White House) at least well into the first term of his presidency and possibly to the end of his life. Yet he invoked God quite often. Does that mean that the Gettysburg Address and the Second Inaugural were sarcasm? Not to be taken seriously? That’s bullshit, like most of what you say in this thread to defend your rude and inappropriate insults. Or are you being sarcastic again?
Oh good. Another moron with no sense of humor thinks he’s the joke police. This is an online forum discussion, not the floor of the Senate, and there’s no current even that somehow makes this the wrong time to quote someone else saying “illegal aliens.” And nobody fucking asked you if you thought the comment was appropriate and nobody cares what you think. The situation would be pretty much the same if you were not an idiot, but since you are, it’s that much less relevant.
No, it isn’t.
I’m not part of that crowd, so I wouldn’t know.
I am asking you how I can be an atheist and aver in a serious way that “illegal aliens” was created by God and handed down on tablets of fire and written in the stars. Please explain that. References to “God damn it” and ceremonial deism don’t suffice. Those kinds of things are figurative or general. You’re saying I don’t believe in God but that I was being serious when I claimed God did some very specific things.
