The Parker House Hotel (now the Omni Parker House) is the oldest hotel in the US, was where the Boston creme pie was invented, and at various times employed Ho Chi Minh as a chef’s assistant and Malcolm X as a belhop.
The oldest school in the country, Boston Latin School, was founded there in 1635, predating Harvard by a year.
Was home to the first subway in the country.
Was where Lorenzo Ponzi operated his eponymous scheme.
And that’s just on a one block stretch of School Street.
Also, contrary to nicknames and jarbabyj’s claims, Boston is the windiest city in the US.
Oh, and there was a flood of molasses in 1919 that killed several people.
Home to 2 state prisons- 1 used to be a federal prison in the 50’s and Charlie Manson spent time here.
John Cougar Mellencamp put on 2 free concerts in the late 80’s at the local college branch.
Semi- Pro baseball team the Chillicothe Paints call the local Veterans Hospital stadium home.
Chillicothe was the first capital of Ohio then they moved it caused it sucked. Then they moved it back to Chillicothe cause where they moved it to sucked more. Then they moved it again caused it still sucked.
Both Andy Dick and Lauren Hutton were born here, according to the IMDB.
We have the oldest synagogue in the United States. It’s a beautiful building, but it’s crammed down an alley behind stores like “Victoria’s Secret” and “Abercrombie & Fitch”.
There is an extremely diverse population here. You can find an event based on just about anything here. We have a Tibetan monk in residence, several synagogues, and a multitude of other religions (this is the “Holy City”). There are Greek Festivals, an African-American festival called MOJA, Spoleto, gay pride rallies, just to name a few.
Our police chief was on “60 Minutes” a couple of years ago for being the first black Jewish police chief. (Well, that’s what they made a big deal about. Nevermind that he cut down on all that crime stuff…)
The “Dirty Bomber” is being held in our Navy Base Brig.
Yeah, we are the place where the Civil War started.
Charleston is home to Pat Conroy, who wrote “The Prince of Tides”, “The Boo” and “The Great Santini” which are all about Charleston, the Citadel, and those great crazy people called Southerners.
DuBose Heyward, author of “Porgy and Bess”, was born and died in Charleston. I’ve found his grave once, and the cemetary that it is in is in terrible shape. I want to organize people to clean it up.
Charleston is also a home for disasters. We’ve had a Great Fire, a bunch of floods (that’s what happens when you build a town below sea level), earthquakes (we’re on a major fault line), and hurricanes. Lots of hurricanes.
There is a replica of the boat that first landed in Charleston in 1670 at Charles Town Landing, a pretty nice park with an animal forest, walking/biking trails, and a movie theater that shows films about Charleston. It used to have this really cool museum underground, but damage during Hurricane Hugo made it unstable.
The horse breeding capital of the world is indeed my current town. (I’m a UK student) ezra_brooks:
This reminds me…
Although Charles Manson was born in Cincinnati, OH, he spent much of his life time in Moundville, WV and then my hometown of Charleston.
I had a baseball coach who claimed to have met Manson as a child. <shudder>
