Things appearing in my Amazon shopping cart that I did not put there

I shop at Amazon a lot. And I check into the Amazon website several times a week. A weird thing has happened to me about three times in the last few months. I would say that it never happened prior to about a year ago.

This morning I went to Amazon to look for something, and there were five things in my shopping cart that I did not put there. There were were four books on four random topics and a bottle of vitamins. These weren’t items that I had ever browsed before, so it’s not like they were “previously viewed.” Of course, I deleted them.

Has this happened to anyone else? Any ideas or explanations that you can think of?

Was the delivery address your address or someone else’s? I had my Amazon account hacked and the hacker put small purchases into my shopping cart (with shipping to a different address), possibly hoping that I would buy them without noticing and then he could graduate to getting me to unknowingly pay for larger items.

In my case, I ended up closing my account because I use my wife’s account nowadays.

Gosh, I didn’t even notice. :woman_facepalming:t4:

If if happens again, I’ll definitely look.

Check your saved delivery addresses. Also, change your password.

Have you ruled out feline intervention ?

Hey! When did I put a $400 cat tree and 5 lbs. of fresh catnip in my shopping cart?

Sounds like you need some cat handcuffs.

The ironic thing is, the car won’t even use the cat tree. They’ll just sleep in the box it comes in.

When we first got Alexa, my neighbor would add things like bikes and power tools to my shopping cart.

THIS!

NOW!

Do not wait until next time!

Do it now!

Yes, now, today, right now–addresses, password, make sure anything like wireless or Alexa is locked.

Yeah, if you didn’t leave the window open when your cats could walk on your keyboard, you were probably hacked.

(I’ve had my cats do a lot of random stuff on my computers, though.)

Contact Amazon customer service…go on a chat with one til you get a live agent. They will help lock your account down til you get your pertinents changed…and if something was ordered and shipped to someone you didn’t approve they will refund you.

Okay, thanks for the replies.

I did change my password.

The stuff was sitting in my cart but no order was placed. I just deleted the things. None of them was cat-related (but that might have been just to lull me…you know.)

All my saved addresses are legit.

I have alerts set up on my credit card (an Amazon VISA rewards card) so that ANY charge of any amount that is made when the physical card is not present (i.e., online) triggers an immediate text message. Even if I make the charge. I also get a text message if a charge is over $50. Everyone should set alerts up on their credit card accounts.

I think I’m okay.

This is outrageous!

This prompted me to verify that my saved addresses are valid, which they are. It’s actually the same address, but with a different name (one’s me, one’s DH). We share the account, so I’d have to check with him on mystery items, but he normally either tells me he’s ordering something or asks me to do it for him.

I have a bunch of other saved addresses, because I’ve ordered gifts for various people.

Me, too.

Amazon keeps putting previous “frequent purchases” from Amazon Fresh into my cart. The problem is that the last time I moved, it was to an area not served by Amazon Fresh, and the items it puts in my cart are in variably sold out.

Albeit, they were things I did purchase frequently, and probably would leave them in my cart and (purposefully) buy them, if I still could order Amazon Fresh, and the items were not always sold out.

Are these things that show up in your cart possibly things you put on a wishlist a long time ago, or might be on a wishlist you looked up? Amazon is trying all sorts of ways of being “helpful” that involve getting you to buy something by accident.

No, I had never browsed any of the four books or the vitamins before.

I get “buy it again” suggestions from amazon, but none of these items winds up in my cart without my putting them there.

I know some people routinely put things in their carts and leave them until they accumulate enough for free shipping or until they decide whether to buy. Since I get free 2-day (theoretically) shipping, I don’t do that. And if I see something I might want to buy, I put it on my wish list, never in my cart.

If it happens again, I’ll pay closer attention. I just saw the things in there, and deleted them after noting that I had never seen any of them before.

Did you ever share your old pass with someone so they could stream Prime Video?
