There’s also a novelty song called “The Thing,” made famous by Phil Harris. You may have heard it: “I discovered a [bump ba-bump], right before my eyes!”
This song was supposedly the reason that they changed the title of the 1951 movie from simply “The Thing” to “The Thing from Another World” – the song came out just before the movie did.
When John Carpenter remade it in 1982 they reverted the title to simply “The Thing” (even though the title image on the screen was made to look exactly like the one from 1951 otherwise).
“Id”
Depends on if Freud is “fiction” or not.
Well, in any case, we’ll always have Forbidden Planet .

Andy Warhol called Edie Sedgewick the IT girl.
When I was a child, we called a penis a Thing, because the word “penis” was considered not nice.
Image generations of women growing up believing penis was a dirty word.
And you also have to include the Things the shapeshifter encountered.

Never heard of that one, but FF turned Ms. Marvel (Sharon Ventura) into the She-Thing and made regular Thing pointy and extra rocky at the same time.
Also saw this on the wiki page for IT the living colossus
In House of M: Fantastic Four #1 , Ben Grimm, the only survivor of the ill-fated space shuttle flight of Reed Richards and his crew, was captured and named “It” by Victor von Doom and was a member of the Fearsome Foursome.
So old Benji boy is both a Thing and an It, depending on the particular universe.
ISTR something called The IT Crowd .
