Robin Williams killed himself.
The Cosby thing, of course.
But on the good side - you can get gay married in South Carolina now! The idea of that happening even ten years ago… and we weren’t last!
Both of these. I never would have thought Robin would commit suicide, and how does a plane just vanish?
Washington DC legalizing marijuana. I didn’t even know it was on the ballot.
The disappearance of the Malaysian airliner.
The realization that I am living through what might be the biggest change in human communication/information technology in the history of our species.
Radio show host Jian Ghomeshi being fired from his own show and then revealed to be a terrible person.
The death of Robin Williams.
Also, this probably didn’t make international news, but there was a shocking local story where a baby was stolen right out of a hospital. She was soon recovered safely, though.
Also, Corporal Nathan Cirillo was gunned down by a Canadian while standing guard at the National War Memorial in Ottawa. Two days earlier, on Monday, Oct. 20, Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent was intentionally struck by the car of another suspected home-grown terrorist.
In Canada! What in the holy fuck people?
1.The utterly hysterical overreaction to Ebola.
2.The ridiculous lies in the Rolling Stone UVA article and the UVA’s idiotic “opens a dialogue” reaction to the lies.
-
The 2014 midterm elections. So many of the close races turned out to be big Republican wins. While I hated the outcome, it also calls into serious question about the accuracy of all the polls.
-
The drop in oil prices combined with the high GDP in the USA. Hopefully, this means the second half of the decade will be much better than the recession plagued first half.
Don’t you mean under-reaction?
This pisses me off because he’s not even been charged, much less found guilty, yet people are presuming his guilt.
If one person accused him that would be one thing. When you have 2 dozen accusers there is probably something there.
Cheap gas.
Miserable election results.
Oddly, I saw Cuba coming. I’m just cynical enough to think it’s to open up new markets for Corporate America.
I was shocked by how virtually impossible it was to get accurate news about the Ferguson riots. In discussions about these subjects it became clear that people were arguing from two completely difference sets of facts. I saw blatant lies recited as gospel on all sides and in the end it made me less trusting than ever of media coverage. The internet is a cesspool of half-truths, lies and agenda-driven propaganda.
So? What’s the problem with that?
Mis-reaction would be a better term. The first shock regarding the outbreak was seeing Dr. Brantly climb out of the back of the ambulance and walk into the hospital. I still cannot believe he did that! When his wife and parents told him that they saw it, and had big hopes for his recovery, he thought they were talking about a hospital security camera, and they said, “No, it was on CNN Breaking News.” When the news initially broke, I just figured that he and Nancy Writebol were both going to end up in an unmarked mass grave somewhere.
BTW, she too was interviewed for the recent “Time” story.
The second biggest shock was finding out…THIS. It’s an offshoot of discussion about the Christian missionaries who got sick, and that apparently there are some people out there who believe a deity GOT Ebola. :dubious: BTW, he does not believe this himself.

BTW, in the end, the taxpayers did not pick up the tab. NBC did.
This one’s a little less outrageous, and is from 2012. Little did he or his family know that their lives would be completely upended in the fall of 2014.
p.s. Has anyone else noticed that 3 of the 10 known American victims (Brantly, Mukpo, and Spencer) are 33-year-old men? If I was an aid worker who fit that demographic, I’d be a bit more worried than usual. I say “known” because there are rumors that there’s an 11th victim currently at Emory.
Absolutely agreed. Even people who were in St. Louis couldn’t figure it out.
And his real cause of death should be classified as Lewy Body Dementia, which his autopsy revealed he had, and not suicide.
As for Bill Cosby, there have been rumors about this for decades.
Solange Knowles punching Jay Z. Rolf Harris being a paedophile. The general horrific storres about paedophile rings in the British establishment. Robin Williams.
And that when CNN ran out of news, they actually had PSYCHICS on talking about what they thought happened.
 :smack:
“Manspreading,” which has been around for years if not decades, only just now became “a thing.”
I had to look that up.
The only time I’ve ever seen that was when I took the city bus to work in the early 1980s, and it was usually done by teenagers who also rode the bus to school, usually because they had been kicked off the school bus.
The Cliven Bundy spectacle was very strange by any measure, but the most surprising part of it was that he was able to rack up over a million dollars in unpaid grazing fees to the federal government before the feds got around to doing anything about it.
Clive’s a wealthy man, and I haven’t heard of his paying any of the money he owes the US government yet. I wonder if he’s still illegally grazing his herd.
