Things I find rude and will make me look down on you

Uh… you do get people who resemble stereotypes, often hilariously so.

Also, and more to the point, stereotyping is when you say “all of group X are/do/think <thing>”. He was comparing his parents to a group with a defined belief system, which is not the same thing as stereotyping at all.

Uh…if you didn’t, stereotyping would not exist.

How is it different?

I didn’t say he did anything wrong. I simply suggested that a way for him to become less judgmental of other people would be to stop stereotyping them.

Well, stereotyping is making generalisations about groups of people. This guy was specifically saying his parents are like a group of people - and considering the group of people he brought up are a political group with a defined belief system, it’s perfectly valid.

I suggest if you want to be less judgemental, maybe stop accusing people of stereotyping when they’re doing nothing of the sort.

EDIT: also, see how fucking condescending unsolicited advice about being less judgemental sounds?

And I say that in describing his family he wasn’t being judgmental or stereotyping them. Tell me why you think he was.

No kidding. Go to work after 10am if that’s a problem for you.

You are wrong: stereotyping is jumping to the conclusion that, because something is generally true, it is always true. For example, generally speaking, stupid people are poor spellers; however, for me to jump to the conclusion that you are stupid simply because you are a poor speller (it’s judgmental, not judgemental) would be stereotyping.

Thanks for the tip. Now here’s a tip for you: if you ever want to be taken seriously by any smart, successful person, lose the “f” word. It makes you sound like an immature, petulant loser.

There you go being judgemental without knowing what you’re talking about again.

And no. Stereotyping is attributing your preconceived ideas about a group to a specific member of that group, or holding preconceived ideas about groups. “This guy is a jew, and jews are cheap, so he must be cheap” is a stereotype. Your thing - “this guy is a jew, and he’s cheap, therefore all jews must be cheap” is not that.

In neither case - let’s assume both are stereotyping - are you correct in accusing the person of doing it (whichever). They likened their parents to Tea Partiers, which is a perfectly valid thing to do because Tea Partiers have certain beliefs in common. That is not stereotyping tea partiers, because tea partiers by definition share those things, while a stereotype is (1) an assumption, and (2) by definition not held in common by all of a group.

Nor is it whatever you’re ranting about, because they did not notice that their parents, being tea partiers, like the colour blue, and assume therefore that all tea partiers have a fondness for blue.

You have demonstrated that you’re a square in a cube’s world. I doubt you could conceive of what a “smart, successful” person might think, let alone tell anyone else. So I’m not going to expend another Planck unit of time reading your witterings in this or any other thread.

Wow, you need a time out. The only one ranting in this thread is you. Maybe some cookies and milk might help. Why don’t you see if your mommie has some.

You are being needlessly cruel here. She can’t have milk at all. It may spill and may ruin her irreplaceable, clothing. Really, irreplaceable at any cost. You sir, are a monster!

He wasn’t stereotyping them, but he was using stereotyping to describe them.
