Tonight I’m going to party like it’s 1999.

I recently reread The Shockwave Rider by John Brunner, published in 1975 (so appropriate to this thread). It was set sometime in the early 21st century, IIRC. In that story, all the cars used by the various characters were mentioned as being electric. They even stopped at one point at a recharging station.
However, not all the cars on the road were electric. The others ran on coal!
I wonder what the nationality of the next pope will be?
Hell, there were people in the 1950s who thought we were running out of oil.
I’ll Venmo you the money.
Be kind. Rewind.
Now that I think about it, verbing nouns has generally been a rising trend, I think really most of the last century, but it started picking up in the 70s, and really took off in the 90s, to the point where by now, people do it without thinking most of the time.
May the force be with you.
I’ll take a selfie.
I saw their new video on MTV.
Leslie Nielsen is a funny guy.
Verbing weirds language.
Just caught myself saying “I’m trying to call him, but he won’t answer his wristwatch!”
John Rockefeller expressed this sentiment a few times in the 1870s, so definitely could have been said in the 1970s.
People have been worried about running out of economically recoverable petroleum for some time; the technology kept improving.
People have been worried about the end of the world for some time. The mechanism keeps getting updated.
“Huberts Pimple” did not describe the effect of running out of *economically recoverable” petroleum. It described the effect of running out absolutely. The shape matches what happened to the North Sea fisheries, and is the reason when things like Crab catches are limited the way they are.
YouTube’s data usage is highly dependent on video resolution. While it can also be significant (up to 3GB per hour for high quality), users have greater control over video quality settings, which can significantly impact data consumption. For example, watching YouTube videos at lower resolutions like 140p can drastically reduce data usage compared to TikTok, which often defaults to higher quality formats.
(Just heard this one today)
“The only reason to go to the mall is if you work there.”
