No one in American public has ever done so, and I cannot imagine why anyone would.
This last cycle has seriously eroded the range of politically suicidal statements. If you can quickly turn around and lay claim to that you’re just expressing the true feelings/opinions in real people’s hearts, and that those taking offense are doing so either out of “political correctness” or out of “privilege”, you can go on.
In a “normal” election during the past 20 years disparaging McCain as non heroic for having been captured would have been a deal-breaking moment in and of itself or else cause for a self-abasing display of contrition. This year it was a mere blip, at worst just another data point of the many reasons to loathe the nominee.
Because the idealization/fetishization is of this archetype of “The Troops” as quietly selflessly suffering, all stoic and Spartan like, to come home as asskicking invincible heroes or honored dead, or otherwise rejoin society all quietly selflessly and stoic like. We’ll applaud them as they get off the airplane but for cryin’ out loud just fade away like the old song said.
I meant, “public life.”

But it is the existence of that prejudice that makes it an intermediate point. We are talking about electoral politics here, perception is reality in an ontological sense.
OTOH, they might find it equally suicidal to oppose him. Best they can hope for is that nobody asks them. Which is too much to hope for.
Schadenfreude is perhaps not the very best Freude, but it’s sure in the top 10, ain’t it?

Come to think of it, despite that whore-doctor’s letter, Trump is no healthy-looking dude, and I can’t believe he got this far screaming that much without suffering a stroke or a heart attack. It’s only a matter of some little time.

Actually, despised as American pols are nowadays, committing suicide on-camera could be an electoral landslide-winner.
Apparently his base didn’t care. I was living in Baltimore, near DC, at the time. I recall seeing an AA wearing a t-shirt reading, “I saw the video. Bitch set him up.”
For some reason, that did not stop W from winning (kindasorta) two terms. Even Gore and Kerry oozed charisma by comparison.
Didn’t Schwarzenegger appear in a porno once? It didn’t kill his political career. Then again, though, maybe California is just different.
There are also some that depend on party. Being openly gay, for instance, will prevent you from winning any election as a Republican, but not necessarily as a Democrat.
How about the candidates spouse? Notice how they have pictures of Trump’s wife out there during her model years when yes, she did pose nude.
