Things that used to be considered "high class" that are now tacky

In the 1920’s novel Dodsworth, the eponymous character embarrasses himself by making the faux pas of dressing (white tie) for dinner on the first night on a transatlantic crossing.

A custom that originated to spare embarrassment to those not traveling with a valet who’d have their wardrobes immediately organized.

Does this mean I should retire my “Members Only” jacket?
