Hey, I hope this was the right place to start this thread but anyways, I was wondering, for those of you who cannot stand the bands or artists that you hate, what are things, if there are any, that you still can appreciate and/or at least can tolerate about these bands or artists?
For me:
The Rolling Stones: I could never stand their music at all, almost every song sounds the exact same to me, along with the annoying vocals, however one thing I can appreciate I guess is that they have become one of the most popular groups ever…
Bob Dylan: I always found him quite boring and irritating to listen to, but there are a couple of songs I find less annoying. I can also appreciate the fact that he has been praised allegedly for his lyrical ability.
What about you?
P.S. I had no intention to start a pointless thread so please forgive me if I did indeed start a thread that many of you consider pointless. Thanks.
I will grant that Meryl Streep is one of the most talented actors of all time. Just don’t ask me to watch anything she’s in. Period. Can’t stand her.
Jay-Z, Dr. Dre, any number of hip-hop artists, producers, etc. Dudes must be doing something right, seeing as they have all the money. Just don’t ask what any of their “talent” is.
Minnie Riperton had an amazing vocal range. But I can’t listen to what she did with it.
I can’t stand the Steve Miller Band, but from what I’ve read about him personally, I think we’d get along great. Plus his band had the very talented Ben Sidran for a few years.
Michael Bay clearly has plenty of talent for directing. I just can’t watch the tripe he makes using that talent.
Sort of the other way around, I hate the piano recordings of Glenn Gould, which are brilliant, but he hums and sings and vocalizes all through the recordings, and I find that just impossibly irritating. So…the technical skill is hugely admirable…but I do find myself hating to listen to him.
The eloquence of rap music is sometimes incredible. There’s a guy who sometimes sits out on the sidewalk, under my window, and practices. It’s very impressive to hear him getting better and better with time.
(Could be worse; I used to live near a bagpipes student!)
I agree with RealityChuck on both Jack Kirby and Frank Sinatra.
Stephen King. He is brilliant at writing horror fantasy novels…material I absolutely cannot read.
Among artists I don’t particularly like, I can respect/admire the following things:
The Rolling Stones - Hey, I couldn’t jump and dance around on stage for 2 and a half hours when I was 22, and I sure won’t be able to do it when I’m 70. Give Mick credit- he’s always worked his butt off to put on a high-energy show.
Jon Bon Jovi- when he got into acting, he certainly COULD have taken the lead role ine something cheesy, just as Mariah Carey did in Honey. I give him credit for working hard, taking acting lessons, and appearing in indie films like She’s The One, and taking smalller, supporting roles in mainstream movies like*** U-571.*** I also give him credit for keeping the original band members together so long.
Madonna. I like almost NONE of her music, but if you don’t appreciate what she’s accomplished, well, name me some other musical acts that broke through in 1982 and are STILL popular three decades later. U2, and who else? See! It ain’t easy to stay on top in the music world that long. She’s even outlasted REM.
I’ve never really understood why Led Zeppelin is considered one of history’s greatest bands. But it’s impossible to deny that they had fantastic instrumentalists and some really haunting guitar parts.
Oh, and most of Lady Gaga’s music doesn’t appeal to me, but she’s had an incredible amount of rigorous musical training - plus, I admire all she’s done as an LGBT activist.
I agree that this is a cool thread topic; it’s nice to see the good in everyone.
Never gave much of a shit about Marilyn Manson’s persona or music, but I attended a festival where he was the capstone and he was very good at playing the crowd. You know how it is when the venue is much larger than the amount of people there needs: when they came up, there was a bunch of people in a rough rectangle close to the scene and many people further out in small groups. When they finished, the rectangle was a lot bigger and many of the people still outside it had gotten closer. I guess you could say I don’t particularly like the play, but I give him thumbs up for acting craftsmanship.
