This Sunday, hubbie and I are heading down to Dallas to celebrate my 21st birthday. I want to see the Ming Dynasty Chinese art exhibit that is going on at the Dallas Museum of Art, but other than that, we don’t really have any ideas. We have seen the aquarium before and we are considering going again if we run out of other stuff. Our hotel is downtown.
What sort of thing do you like? I’d go to the Hotel Za Za. It’s where a lot of the “in” people like to go, but it’s fun if you’re not–it’s great people watching. The bar there is Dragonfly. People there are friendly enough to buy you drinks–especially on your 21st. I got smashed on free drinks there on my 30th.
For more casual and since it’s supposed to be good weather, try Primo’s or is it Primeuax’s on McKinney–good patio, good snacks and great people watching. If you want a burger, fries and beer try Snuffer’s on Greenville.
For dinner, depending on how much you want to spend try Javier’s. It is expensive if you have drinks but it’s fantastic–you’ll need reservations. For a fun dinner that is moderate, try Monica’s Acca y Alla in Deep Ellum (near downtown). Monica is transgendered (I think that’s how you say it) and she’s been in Dallas forever which is so cool I don’t have the words–I think she has 3 restaurants now. The food is mexican, but not tex mex. You will have a gay hispanic man wait on you (yes, every damn one of them is I believe) and the ones I’ve met are all dolls. The rasberry margarita’s are pure evil and they have a latin jazz band on the weekends.
For just lunch I’d try Keller’s on Northwest Highway–say hi to me if you see a blue Audi (dammit now I’m gonna have to wear makeup). It’s an old drive-in. It’s been there since 1947 and it has sinful cheeseburgers and they BRING BEER TO YOUR CAR so you can drink it right there–can you believe that?! It’s pretty special and shouldn’t be missed–plus it’s very cheap.
For entertainment try Northpark Mall or the Galleria. I can’t afford half of the stuff in there but it’s fun to windowshop at Tiffany’s and the like or try on designer dresses you have no intention of buying. You could also try the arboretum on Garland Road (It’s beautiful) and maybe take a walk by White Rock lake which is right next door. Also I think we have an IMAX somewhere.
I don’t know where in OK you’re from, but if you want to be a little bit more country and western try Fort Worth (about 45 minutes from downtown Dallas) but you may be used to that stuff. Joe T. Garcias there is a classic for mexican or try Riscky’s steaks in the stockyard area. Sundance Square is a great place to wander and shop.
I haven’t been there in a good 15 years. I can’t believe that!!
Midevil Times is a hoot if you’ve never been. Check the Internet for the best ticket prices though; you’ll get raped at the door if you don’t.
Lots of people, lots of beer, lots of food. They usually cordon off a couple of blocks of Greenville Ave. around some bars and have a block party. Fun stuff!
Want music? The Gypsy Tea Room almost always has good shows lined up. Trees and Dada usually have good live music to offer as well. If you’re looking for something a little more lo-fi, Acoustic Chaos happens every Wednesday night at Liquid Lounge. Right across the street from that you’ll find the Velvet Hookah, which you will enjoy even if you hate smoking. If you want to throw back some beer, July Alley has the best jukebox anywhere in Dallas.
Hungry? Try the Green Room or Sambuca for some great dining in Deep Ellum. Be sure and grab a burger at the Angry Dog, you’ll be glad you did. Eat at any one of the Cafe Brazil locations at least once, and give BreadWinners in uptown a try as well. Have lunch at the Metro Cafe in downtown if you get the chance. Swing by Liberty Noodles as well.
Stop by Good Records, and then venture north to Bill’s Records if you’re feeling adventurous. If you’re willing to go that far, why no go all the way up to Denton to check out the Kharma Kafe and Rubber Gloves?
Looking for art? The DMA is great, but also try to swing by the Kimbell in Fort Worth. There are plenty of other art museums around that area. While you’re there, check the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens and witness their ponds full of mongrel Koi fish.
Drive down low, lower, and lowest Greenville. I’m sure you’ll find something that suits you. If you want a tattoo, go to Ace In the Hole.
If you go to 2001 Bryan Street in downtown and step inside the gold building, they may let you visit the top floor. That’s where J.R. Ewing’s office was in Dallas. I used to work there.
Thanks everyone! Sorry I haven’t gotten back sooner, hubby and I both came down with the flu. We are hoping we will be recovered enough to leave tomorrow
