I seem to remember a thread on this not that long ago, but I did a search and could find nothing (of course, I am famous on this board for my incompetent searches). I imagine that it was early enough this year that it fell into the realm of “SDMB the missing episodes.”
My wife’s family is having a reunion/wedding in San Antonio/San Marcos (actually, the wedding is in San Marcos, but one of the other in-laws wants to have the reunion portion in San Antonio) in Late July. I have managed to avoid the last four or five of these things so I really should go, but I would like to find things I could do to avoid the entire herd of my in-laws.
I know this sounds terrible and “the family” isn’t that bad, especially in ones and twos, but if I have an excuse to go see or do something I would be kind of happy.
Wife and I went to San Antonio a few years ago; did a few of the usual tourist things like the Alamo and one of the mission tours. The Riverwalk is really nice; lots of restaurants and there’s an interesting boat tour.
We were talking about going again sometime, which says something as except for Vegas we seldom go anyplace more than once.
Whatever you do, DO NOT go to Wonder World. It is perhaps the worst tourist trap in the region.
Otherwise, I’d suggest the San Antonio Botanical Gardens (very very nice), the Zoo (among the best in the nation), and Natural Bridge Caverns (north of San Antonio, south of New Braunfels). The best waterpark in the US, Schlitterbahn, is in New Braunfels.
Assuming you’re going to eat in San Antonio, I’d recommend the Alamo Cafe for good Tex-Mex. There’s also a Pig Stand in the area, if your tastes lean that way.
Wonder World is a horrid little PoS tourist trap that has glass bottom boats, swimming pigs, and ugly looking hookers dressed up as mermaids drinking cokes underwater. I fell for it once when I escaped from Delaware.
man, Brainerd is the same way, we have to make our own entertainment-- if any of y’all come to brainerd I’m sure I could drive ya out to the old abandoned school that’s haunted by a dead janitor, and supposedly, the principal hung himself in the auditoreum…
and on a lighter note, I know of an old Poo plant in brainerd too, been abandoned a few years, but It still kinda smell like shit, but that smell may be wafting from the new poo plant… we’re not sure yet…
that didn’t help at all, but what I can say is get out and enjoy whatever you don’t have back home, that makes for a vacation worth remembering.
Well, of course keep us posted on the event so we can celebrate sufficiently. And even more congratulations to you and Airman Doors. I imagine that right now in the Texas heat it (pregnancy) is not a pleasant experience.
To everyone else: thanks for the information. Most of the different places sound nice and possibly good places to get along with my in-laws or ditch them.
