In a month I will be visiting Savannah, GA and Charleston, SC.
I see there are some old threads on this but they are 15 years old. So, asking again since things have probably changed.
I am up for things to see, things to do and restaurants and bars to go to. Live music places for after dinner would be great (NO clubs…a person playing piano or a small band is fine…think a place for old people and not 20-something). I’ll have two days/nights in both cities.
If you want to throw Hilton Head in that is fine since that will be my last stop.
Don’t worry about cost (not that it doesn’t matter to me but I’d rather know about it and decide if it is worth the money).
Augusta and Columbia are too far unless there is something life changing that absolutely cannot be missed there.
Lots of good restaurants in the Old Savannah area. Really can’t go wrong and if you happen to be staying in that area, it’s an easy walk. River walk along the Savannah River as well. You’ll see different options for the types of clubs and music you described. Enjoy!
Agree about the restaurants. Also check out the Paris Market and Brocante. Truly a bizarre place. Ms. Lurki an I have stopped there for years on trips south.
I love Patriot’s Point near Charleston. There are museum warships to tour: an aircraft carrier, submarine & destroyer. Looking at the website, I see there is a ‘Vietnam Experience Exhibit’ that is new since my last visit.
Side note: I don’t know if it’s still there, but for many years the Charleston museum had a replica of the Hunley outside. Most historical depictions showed the torpedo mounted on a spar projection from the top of the bow (sticking straight forward), which we no know was incorrect, that it was mounted from the bottom, and angled upward. I’m guessing that if the replica is still there, it was probably too costly to try to correct it.
Tons of great restaurants in Charleston - my favorite is Circa 1866. Pricey but exceptional.
The Gibbes Museum of Art is a good small art musuem.
Lots of historical houses South of Broad if that’s your thing.
I’ve been to Charleston a few times. The horse drawn buggy tours are worth considering. The drivers are very knowledgeable and you’ll get a lot of history. The routes are drawn by lottery at the beginning so there’s no way of knowing exactly where you’ll go. Its all good. High Cotton on East Bay St. in the historic district has very good food and there is often some live music. 2 or 3 piece groups and not blasting. The shrimp and grits at Sunday brunch were awesome. Revelry Brewing has a nice roof top bar, if you are into beer at all. When its not too hot, the Holy City is one of my favorite places to just walk around and stumble into neat stuff. I can’t wait to go back.
It’s been a good number of years since I lived there (Savannah area) but Keller’s Flea Market used to be a good way to spend some time. Do they still do the Ghost Walks in those two cities? Went on one for both Charleston and Savannah, a guided walking tour of some of the more (most?) haunted buildings. Went on some tours of a few of the old plantation mansions and old Ft Jackson and Ft Pulaski the Savannah area as well, if those are still a thing.
That restaurant looks great but since I would have to buy dinner for four other people so too pricey (me and a date, I’d probably do it but this is an extended family trip). Five us with liquor, tax and tip would likely be $1000.
Great advice all. Keep it coming and thanks again!
