Things We Lost in the Virus

An e-mail I got about a month ago (some names and phone numbers redacted):

ETA: Related AOPA article:

Maines has closed. It’s the entire chain but I noticed it because of their local store.

The weird thing is this is the second time our local Maines has closed. It opened in 2015 and then closed in 2016. But it reopened in the same location in 2017. They didn’t even have to put up a new sign.

Another local closing and it’s another video store; the Family Video store in North Chili. I guess I won’t have to deal with video store closings after this one; it’s the last video store in what I would consider to be a normal driving range (it’s about fifteen miles from where I live). With this closing there will effectively be no more video stores in my area of the world.

I can’t imagine Cirque du Soleil won’t be able to make a comeback after venues can open and host crowds. Bankruptcy is almost surely a financial action regarding contracts that can’t be paid and the like.

I stopped by today and found out this is more extreme than I was aware. Family Video is closing all of its video stores in New York. I don’t know if they’re closing all stores nationwide.

We have lost freedom

The supermarket salad bars are starting to come back around here and last month I went to a buffet restaurant with my parents on a visit to Lancaster County.

I just read read that the Roadside America attraction in southeast Pennsylvania announced it was permanently closing in November (they have been temporarily closed since March). The exhibits are being sold off at an online auction in January.

A couple of restaurants that we always went to and the worst of these was the best restaurant in Colorado Springs - Coquette’s Bistro

Here’s a gallery of pictures from the exhibit to give an idea of what it’s like. Keep in mind this was all built by one person.

Still going strong in Hawaii, albeit fewer in number.

The Sky Gallery restaurant located at the old Cincinnati airport terminal. It resided inside the terminal where you could still see WPA murals that were painted by William Harry Gothard commissioned in the late 30’s. The architecture is Art Deco with the interior nicely appointed…

It was just a lovely piece of history to visit.
