And do we have to get the obligatory post in every thread where anyone expresses the opinion that they don’t like something, that “If you don’t like blahblahblah, then don’t blahblahblah”. Does something so blindingly obvious really need to be stated?
(I’m probably guilty of this, too, and I have to remember to try to never do it again.)
There’s a certain amount of priggishness here that gets me down.
Also, calling “cite?” in GD seems to me to be just a way to get your opponent to shut up. You know the guy probably isn’t going to want to do an extensive internet search to make a point in a message board debate. So you can claim victory in the debate, and every time your opponent returns you just say “Still waiting for those cites, bub,” until he goes away.
And in a related note, nothing on this board matters in the larger world. We won’t put a stop to conspiracy theories, affect the next election, or bring back that cancelled show. I like a good political debate or rant as much as the next guy, but don’t fool yourself that it means anything. These are just barroom conversations, though in public and with internet access.
“Um… no.” (followed by clearly superior arrogant answer)
and
“We’ve done this before…”
Maybe I am reading too much into this one, but I definitely can hear the implicit “sigh” that accompanies it.
Of course, if I am asking about pounding silver half dollars into cool rings using a spoon and somebody pops in to say “Hey, there was a great thread about this just last week. Check it out <link>”, that’s entirely different.
I think that “Google is your friend…” is not as common as it once was because it is recognized as being so annoying.
Nitpicking tangential parts of the post is a close second. In the more egregious cases, it annoys the nitpickee and serves little purpose other than to show everyone how smart the nitpicker is.
I was thinking about those poll types of threads that Hampshire mentioned, and I agree — I have never been able to articulate exactly what kind of thread this is without feeling rude: “I want to say my answer but I don’t really care about what everyone else says” But that’s sometimes true, and it’s always so disappointing to see I have several SDMB mails in my inbox and I think “Cool, some threads to read up on” and I find out that it’s one of those annoyingly long-lived answer-but-don’t-read kinds of threads. After a few days I unsubscribe.
I am replying to fewer of those these days for the same reasons mentioned by others.
I dislike all the discussions of American politics - bo-ring. (Hey, you asked what I disliked; you didn’t specify it had to be reasonable ).
I second the intolerance of other people’s beliefs, especially supernatural ones. I realize there are a lot of hardcore skeptics here, but they won’t even tolerate discussions of things like that here.
I also second the excruciating, painfully nit-picking political correctness.
The knee-jerk outraged, mean responses. If someone says something that upsets you, you don’t need to go to a full nuclear response instantly. There are people on the other ends of the screen you’re posting on.
Too much negativity here sometimes. We don’t have to pretend life is all sunshine and roses, but it’s not all clouds and crap, either.
I hate it when everyone jumps all over anyone who dares to mention ghosts/UFO’s/psychics/etc. Sure it’s silly, but some people take enjoyment in the entertainment aspect of that stuff and to ridicule them for it by repeatedly getting in their (proverbial) face with “You know that stuff’s fake and doesn’t exist and anyone who thinks it does is stupid, right? Right?! RIGHT???” is obnoxious, rude, and 90% of the time has nothing to do with the questions posed in the OP and serves only to make the poster feel smug.
Edited to say: what featherlou said.
Did I mention I also hate it when folks comment who obviously have not read the whole thread? Heheh.
I got bored with “sequential thread titles” threads a long time ago. By the time you see it yourself, chances are those two threads won’t likely be listed together anyway.
Hypothetical example:
Thread 1: “What’s are your favorite guilty-pleasure movies?”
Thread 2: “Police Academy sequels”
Okay, so they lined up nicely at just the right time for someone to spot it. Big deal.
The outright meanness in the Pit. Yep, tis the Pit and all, but not all posters need eviscerating. Especially those threads in the Pit where someone is pitting a service or a new purchase or even a taste in films.
There seems to be a kneejerk need to say “you’re wrong and here’s why” over and over again in the Pit. It’s one opinion. It doesn’t have to change yours. Why not let the poster vent a bit?
There’s a lot of smug arrogance-I’m-the-smartest-kid-in-class mentality here at times which is irksome. We all have our areas of expertise; we can all learn from one another (if only what not to do/be etc).
And I’m especially fed up with the whole “if you don’t feel this way about X, you must have personal issues” argument. Who is to say what in our lives has shaped our responses and desires (meaning hopes and ambitions)?
Ran into another one that gets up my schnozz - long-standing posters who will not conform to SDMB standards for formatting. We don’t ask for much, but we* do like it when you don’t quote the entire OP when you’re the second poster, or quote the entire OP or other post when you’re only addressing part of it, or put the quoted post below your answer to it. Quoted post first, then your response. It’s just the way we do here.
I hate that since the troll rule was revoked, people have already completely devalued the term to the point where it communicates nothing. At this point, at least in the pit, anyone who you disagree with is “a troll.” See today’s thread, where a valuable member of the board with hundreds of posts under his belt is called a troll because someone disagrees with him. Ridiculous.
I hate the whole “too many chiefs and not enough Indians” situation with the moderators. I’m sure there aren’t that many, but it often feels like every other poster is a moderator. I also really dislike the “Moderator Culture” on the board, where the Mods feel that they have to be insulting, wisecrackin’ CoolGuys out of a Tarantino flick or something - “Mod note: Blow me. I closed yer fuckin’ thread, now kiss my ass. You’re lucky I don’t ban ya right here and now. Pussy!” (obvious exaggeration)
It greatly bothers me that nothing was done about Tubadiva after the TubaGate incident. We could have lost the entire board over that thing, not to mention real jobs, and she keeps thundering along unpunished, doling out sarcasm and rudeness to paying members wherever she goes.
Uh…not to nitpick, and I haven’t read teh whole thread, but I can’t believe nobody has mentioned why nobody has started a things you dislike on the SDMB thread. What?
(Seriously, out of all of those, I hate the “What?” thing the most. I never understand what I’m intended to infer).
Reading this thread, it appears that I avoid a lot of the more irksome stuff or tune out rather quickly, but there is one thing that gets me every time:
I’m in Cafe Society, settling in to a fun sounding thread about tv, characters on tv, plots on tv shows - whatever. And then, out of nowhere it’s all. about. BUFFY! And not that cute one who lived with Uncle Bill and Mr. French either!
Or are Southern (all of whom are evidently redneck bigoted Bible thumping quasi literate fundamentalists due to some spell cast by Marie Laveau and Jefferson Davis’s lovechild).
My least favorite thing currently (now that my former least favorite things have dropped their memberships): The (U&@#$(@#$ing TWO MINUTES BETWEEN SEARCHES!
Oh, and another thing - I hate when some Doper who’s apparently been living under a rock hears something that’s existed in popular culture for years, often in a ridiculously high-profile manner, and thinks that because they heard it on the SDMB that “the person who done said that must be a Doper - OH MY GOD!” and then they come on here and make a post like -
And then someone has to come along and let them know that whatever term they thought originated on the board has been in use for years in popular culture, and they’re clueless and the whole thing is embarrassing for everyone involved.
I recently saw someone freak out because they had no idea that “How YOU doin’?” was from Friends, one of the most watched sitcoms of all time, ever. “OMFG, I thought for a moment that someone from the board had traveled back in time and started writing for the show!!!”
