I do that most of the time except when actually having the salad WITH the meal, which happens a lot, with the salad standing in for veggies which we’re not big fans of. What is the point of having a salad before the meal? Is it an appetizer? No, it is not. It’s saying, "here, fill up on this rabbit food now, because you sure as hell won’t want it after tasting real food!
But that’s never been my attitude. I like nice tasty pungent salads, made with things like Caesar dressing with garlic and anchovies, and it works after dinner in the same way as pungent cheeses. I understand this to be called the “European style”. I have no idea if there’s any typically European behavior in this regard, but it’s my behavior.
Also, I read most threads backwards. There’s probably some brilliantly insightful stuff at the beginning of this thread that I haven’t seen yet!
When I was a kid, I used to shower by working my way up, ending by shampooing my hair. I’m not sure why, but that just seemed the way to do it. Then I realized that when I was rinsing the shampoo out of my hair, the shampoo, and whatever dirt it had accumulated, was running down over my nice, clean body. Since then, I start at the top and work downward; each lather and rinse draining down over parts yet to be washed.
I don’t know which of those is backwards, but one of them must be.
Is it? I’m not so sure. To me, it seems like an older generation vs younger generation thing, that 100 years or 50 years ago the general preference was for steak to be more “done” than it is now.
It is. I think they have their terms mixed up. If they’re starting at the small curl, I can’t see any way of completing a six without drawing the curl clockwise.
Hmmm…not at all what I expected from the subject line.
My immediate answer was, of course, crew (rowing). In an eight-man shell, all eight oarsmen face backwards for the entire race. Only the cox faces forward.
Do you mean drawing the peeler towards you, as opposed to away from you? Most people I know do it the same way. It’s much easier to handle the vegetable or fruit.
Yes, and often I use a paring knife and do it the same way, my mom always peeled away from her, I do it towards myself. Peelers may be designed that way, but as I said, the knife made my mom crazy to see me do it.
This! And when I do this method in front of people, I get funny looks.
I started to do it, when I found out how bad medicine tastes. I took some bayer aspirin, and then clumsily spilled my water before I could swallow the tablets.
I can still taste the dissolving aspirin on my tongue. Yeeccccch.
A pastor I knew recommended “blessing” (“offering thanks”) over a meal after it has been consumed. I think it makes perfect sense. This opinion is not common in my part of the country.
I peel bananas from the bottom, not the handle. I read online that it is easier that way and sure enough it was true.
FWIW I would disagree with the OP about steaks, The conventional wisdom I have always heard (and observed in my life) is kids and young people often prefer steaks well done and rarer as they get older so you are very normal
