As I mentioned above, this is not unheard of. It’s a strong superstition in some cultures that drinking water while eating is bad for you.
I didn’t realize it was a cultural thing. I figured it for a quirky family rule.
In my house growing up, the edict applied to all beverages, not just water - coffee, tea, soda etc.
I didn’t fully realize how weird it was until adulthood.
There’s also a belief in parts of Europe that drinking ice water is unhealthy. A Swiss friend once told me it’s a good way to catch a cold.
I’ve enjoyed (sic) warm beers in other countries for this reason.
Yes, that would also apply. But in my family’s culture, coffee, tea, or soda would not be an option anyway. Those drinks would be for particular times of day, like snacktimes, not with meals.
Just pissed myself laughing. Thank you.
There’s an interesting episode of the podcast series Decoder Ring about this:
To those of you unfamiliar with Decoder Ring: it’s an entertaining (IMHO) series about pop culture.
(ETA - I meant “popular culture,” not “soda pop culture” specifically.)
This is something I’ve never really gotten: concerts. By the same token: recordings of concerts.
I understand that many people enjoy the excitement of a live performance–as well as being part of history (“I was there for 'The ‘93 Tour!’”). But personally, I would much rather hear the performers’ music clearly, over headphones, as recorded in a studio…rather than through an echo-y sound system in a stadium where it gets drowned out by the people next to me yelling, “WOOOO!” at the tops of their lungs. Completely spoils the musical experience for me.
I’m with you. My son-in-law posted pictures of meals for a year. Why I can’t guess. I can’t imagine why anyone would be interested in what we eat, and we eat interesting stuff.
My wife turns on captions on BritBox when she has trouble with the accents, and I’ve never noticed a lot of mistakes.
Now, what I don’t get is why so many shows have turned into soap operas. Well, I understand why they try to hook viewers, but better scripts might work just as well. Things adapted from novels I get, but so many shows have to introduce big scary monsters or enemies to help them generate scripts instead of getting new ideas. We stopped watching Castle when it became less about solving murders and more about the conspiracy. And the resolution of these multi-season arcs seem to suck.
I’m not against all arcs, just ones that take over the series.
When I was in the Boy Scouts they actively told me to stop bringing cold water or water with ice on hikes because “Cold water just makes you more thirsty and you wind up using more water in the long run”.
That was the same place that told me “Soda contains salt so you actually LOSE hydration when you drink it”
I don’t understand the obsession to bring up politics as a discussion starter amongst strangers or people who haven’t interacted in a while. What do you want to IMMEDIATELY start an angry debate right in public?
Hear, hear!
I’ve attended a few hundred of the stupid things over the years, and from about Concert #3 on, I’ve never understood why people go, other than why I go: to be sociable. It was standing up in the Felt Forum listening to the Grateful Dead in 1973 when I first asked myself “Am I enjoying this interminable experience of standing up in a crowd shouting and screaming around me while the band plays songs I can barely make out 100 feet away from me?”
This is a good one. I don’t understand it either, unless there’s simply a finite limit on creativity and every good show eventually devolves to this. It’s why we gave up on “Who’s Does Penny Next?”, although Sheldon was still funny.
I love live music, but, yeah, I wish everyone in the audience would sit down and shut up.
I noticed this thread some time ago, but have refrained from opining because I had to think about it some more. But, here it is.
What I don’t “get” is how so many people who, as Americans, have enjoyed a privileged and, compared to billions around the world, opulent life, can not only accept but actively support a man who has openly showed himself to be a criminal and a traitor. This is a man who openly tried to overthrow our free democracy and basically install himself as a dictator. This is a man who openly hates minorities and who openly supports stripping women of their freedom to decide. This is a man who is leading a movement that would destroy the government that has allowed us to have all the things we have. I just don’t get it.
I wonder exactly how deep the passion for this guy is. If he were to try to mobilize his MAGAt army to do something good or charitable, how many would say “meh” and just change channel?
We saw Joan Baez in the 70’s after Woodstock, in a new modern concert hall. We all sat and listened and applauded after each song politely, remaining in our seats. She said, ‘you’re a lovely audience - so PROPER’. I guess it was a new experience for HER, playing to an audience not rolling around sh!t-faced in the mud and screaming ‘Night They Drove Ol’ Dixie Down, wooooooo!’
I have an answer to this one! Easy! We were not allowed to drink milk (or anything else) with meals because ‘stop gulping down that milk, your stomach will get full and you won’t be able to finish your meal!’
beer snob mode>Actually, in the US we seem conditioned to drinking beer very cold. If you go to a beer event, you’ll notice people cupping their glass, allowing the contents to warm a bit, while appreciating the aroma. If you are drinking good beer, try pouring three glasses at different temperatures and see if you can appreciate the difference. </beer snob mode>
