Gods forgive me, that’s funny.
Complete honesty is one of the funniest things in the world.
Did I write this post? I didn’t think I did, but I could’ve.
My wife’s boss didn’t know about the Sandy Hook School shooting until he heard people talking about it at work on Monday. I thought that was a bit odd.
I don’t even know enough to know why that’s funny.
I went to see my parents for Christmas the year of the tsunami in . . . The Phillipines? Thailand? Anyhow, I didn’t watch the news the whole time I was there, and I still don’t know much about it. The news had already moved on to fundraisers rather than reports.
I’m another one in this boat. Due to finances, I was out of the loop on most pop culture from 1992 to 2000 or so (working two jobs while barely keeping my head above water, plus living in a crappy basement apartment that effectively blocked broadcast TV and radio), then from 2002 to 2011, I was juggling two jobs and school, and had no time to watch TV, go to movies, etc. I did stay up on music during school, and tried to keep up on the news, but that was pretty much it. My friends get frustrated trying to talk to me about anything they’re into.
My ex-fiancee was in a mental hospital for several months from the end of 2009 to spring of 2010. When she was released, I picked her up at the hospital, and it turned out that she’d heard nothing of the Haiti earthquake beyond “Haiti’s in bad shape.” She had the impression that there had been another coup or military incident.
Yeah me too, but it flows so well – “… yet another Gangnam related shooting.”
I knew it was Asian – not even sure how I knew that. I thought maybe some Asian gangster … fashion maybe? … stereotype? The closest image I could come up with would be something like a Yakuza Zoot Suit.
And now I’ve gone ahead and looked it up, but I still haven’t watch the video. I think I would prefer the North Korean pop hit, “Excellent Horse-Like Lady”, which I HAVE seen. I’m a very strange guy, I suppose, having watched more North Korean pop music videos (1) than South Korean pop music videos (0).
My husband and I went to a Catholic mass recently with his parents. It’s been quite awhile, so imagine our surprise when all the words different. Thanks Catholic Church for making it glaringly obvious that we haven’t attended a mass in more than a year.
North Korea has pop hits? How late am I to this, 'cause this may be my submission to the thread?
/Knows Gangnam-Style, at least.
Edit: nah, I’ll submit my friend playing The Tragically Hip’s, “New Orleans is Sinking” for me, 20 years after it’s release. Great tune!
I found out about the crash of American Airlines Flight 587 this past summer. You know, the plane that crashed in Queens a couple of months after 9/11 and killed 230 people. In my defense, I was 14 at the time, but I am assuming this was absolutely all over the news that November and I just completely missed it. Until I saw an episode of Air Crash Investigation this past June. “Wait, when was that? Huh?”
I also missed the construction of a county courthouse. I was away at college, came home to visit, and drove past it while running an errand. That night, I asked my parents, “Wow, they built that new courthouse pretty fast, huh?” Upon which I was informed that it had been there for almost 2 years. Well, then.
Edit: My personal all-time winner isn’t me, however, but a middle-aged gentleman I encountered about 3 years ago. In the course of conversation, it came out that he was unaware that Germany was no longer split. I’m really hoping he did know this but had just forgotten.
Not me but one guy apparently missed the whole Watergate/Nixon steps down thing. He said at one point he heard a reference to president FORD and was all like WTF was there a coup or something? To be fair he was working on his doctorate in statistics so I imagine he was rather busy at the time.
Tiananmen Sq and the death of Kholmeni (sp?) in Iran. They both happened in the month I was sailing with my boyfriend. We didn’t have any kind of long-range radio so I didn’t hear about that until I happened to read an old Time magazine in a cafe.
More recently, whatever happened during the week of power/cable outages after Tropical Storm Sandy. Say, how did that election turn out?
I missed the fall of the Berlin Wall.
I was a freshman in college, and - in my defense - it was midterms, and every single class had a 10-page paper due. My roommate and I were in the same degree plan, so we did a lot of studying, writing, and revisions together. One day, at the very end, we went to the library together, and were talking as we went up to the circulation desk. I remember one of us saying “Germany? Nothing’s happened in Germany for years now,” and getting this look of disbelief from the librarian, who then raised an eyebrow and told us that the Wall had fallen.
It was kind of mindboggling at the time.
Gangnam? That could be a typo, but that is all I could tell you about it either.
North Korea says it’s a hit and who am I to argue? I heard about this a year or two back when Lil Kim was first seen in public with the woman he later married. At the time, she was mis-identified as the lead singer of a pop music group whose biggest hit was the horse-like lady number, which could be seen on Youtube.
But this morning I bit the bullet and watched the Gangnam video. I liked it (even more than the North Korean tune!), though I really don’t see why it’s such a sensation.
Welll, statistically speaking, the resignation of a president was a zero-chance event at the time, so he can be forgiven.
Listen to it 324 more times and then tell me how much you like it. Then listen to and watch 78 parody videos. This one makes me weep for all of humanity. Count your blessings you have only heard the original as of now.
Apparently a song that’s 80% Korean words can become the number one video of all time on Youtube with over ONE BILLION VIEWS (yes that’s a B), just by having a catchy chorus and a retarded horse dance.
We sadly aren’t that far from having TV shows like “Ow, my balls!” and “Fart sound showcase”. I’d feel old, but I’m too busy feeling like pop culture is devolving itself into oblivion.
“Ow, my balls!” is now in reruns. “Fart sound showcase” was cancelled halfway through its first season and replaced by “Belly Button Lint Collections of the Stars”, with a different guest displaying their collection each week.
You’ve got to pay more attention to the world around you!
