I realize they should’ve named it something else.
And give up that theme music? Never.
I think most of the movies have at least one scene where they’re using disguises to trick an enemy or infiltrate a dangerous location, along the lines of the original series.
And Marvel who should’ve named The Avengers something else. I mean, come on, there was already a crime-fighting team with that name!
And then I wouldn’t get so excited when someone says they like them (I’ve learned to pause before blurting out “Steed and Peel were so good together!”)
Were you able to see the show in as-broadcast form? I had heard that they neutered it by replacing all of the real rock-and-roll with generic music because of the cost/complexity of dealing with the copyright issues.
I can’t imagine watching the first episode without Johnny Fever putting on Bob Seger’s “Old Time Rock and Roll” after the dramatic record scratch.
They sorted out most of the music rights issues I believe, yes.
Or Carlson walking in on Johnny in his booth as he listens to Floyd’s Dogs. “I don’t do requests…”
Has held up:
- Game Of Thrones (earlier episodes)
- I, Claudius
- Emma Peel!

- Only Fools And Horses
- Star Wars (originals)
- Big Lebowski

- Get Smart
- Mary Tyler Moore (still very smart)
What Did People See In This?
- Miami Vice
- 24
- Manimal (just kidding)
- I Dream of Jeannie
- Different Strokes (even if it was influential)
- Some 80s comedians (Kinison, Dice, Vos, etc.)
Yeah, Shout Factory put out a box set that had almost all of the original music restored including in the iconic spots. It’s not 100% but it’s no “Hold me closer, Terrible Dresser” either and we found it enjoyable. I had seen it during the original run and “original” syndication, she had never seen it at all.
I really enjoyed the first season.
The next 7, not so much. Pretty much rinse and repeat, again and again.
Yeah, that’s what I meant.
I actually liked the second season of 24 the best. Very exciting and full of unexpected twists. The last few seasons were definitely mediocre.
Yep, that team beat the comic by about two years.
To be honest, neither of them should have been called “avengers” - both teams focused much more on prevention than they did on vengeance.
The first season of The Avengers, when Steed was really the second man to amateur David Keel, was where they actually did some avenging.
But the Marvel group? What have they ever avenged?
Jurassic Park holds up. Not a moment of wasted film time, excellent storytelling, alternately awe-inspiring and suspenseful dinosaurs, great dialog, great fun.
They butchered the theme music in the first movie, too. Beat it with a stick until it was in 4/4 instead of the original 5/4, probably to make it danceable.
In many ways, I actually liked it more 30 years after it came out than I did fresh. There was so much hype and talk about it, that when I saw it in the first theatrical run I was disappointed. Watching it again a year ago the hype had just faded into a classic, and I could enjoy the good parts, and feel nostalgic for SGI when the cringe computer stuff happened.
We recently rewatched after not seeing for many years and, yep!
I was ten when it came out, so it rocked my face off. And I can’t guess how many times I watched it as a kid. We owned the VHS.
Really pleasant surprise to learn it wasn’t all nostalgia.
What was cringey to you?
I saw Jurassic Park on opening night. When they showed the computer screen, my friend leaned over to me and said “that’s Unix” just a few seconds before the girl on screen said it. I’ve heard people complain about that scene, but that line is demonstrably okay with me.
