That weird 3d file manager is about the least Unix thing I can imagine. And who puts buildings under /usr? They should probably go in /usr/local or /opt.
Actually restarting the security system would have been something immensely boring, like /etc/init.d/ingen-sec restart
I think if the kid had given the same line, but the screen had simply been a # _ it would have been better. After finding the command, the dramatic tension could be enhanced by closeups of . after . appearing on the screen as the security system reloads.
(Joking, I know that text displays are not very photogenic, but:
The hacking scene in The Matrix Reloaded is only on screen for a few seconds, but is fantastic, because it depicts a real vulnerability in ssh that was known at the time the movie was made, but was not known at the time events inside the matrix were taking place.)
Hehe, I didn’t like it very much at all when it came out. I remember making a friend of mine kind of upset when I stated that the CG dinosaurs were better actors than the human ones involved. I still pretty much stand by that, but in retrospect I was really harsh on a popcorn movie. It’s fun and enjoyable as long as you don’t think too hard about it.
Binge watching made certain things really stand out. Like the use of “tender age” for a young kid. At some point they began using the term and from that point forward they always used it. Has anyone ever used the phrase?
Why would they repeatedly go to arrest someone, then when the “offender” was seen, but still 50 yards away, they’d scream, “Chicago Police Department, stop and stop the weapon!!”. Of course the dude runs and they begin an exciting chase. You’d think they’d learn and at least try to get close before alerting the guy to their intentions.
That was actually the SGI 3D disk usage visualizer that came with Irix. Very cool way to see how much space your /tmp folder is using up, less useful for unlocking doors to escape velociraptors
My god, all the FBI’s (and Law and order…coincidence? I thin not) do this. They are they worst at containing a situation. Gotta have a foot chase in every episode I guess. You’d think they could at least surround the suspect. But the absolute worst was when they had the whole SWAT team surround and enter a building, and the suspect ran out right in front of them. You guys need to go back for more training.
Speaking of chases, and “years”, sometimes IU watch a little bit of CHiPS st lunch time. Those two are the worst at chasing cars. They have hi performance bikes, but they regularly get outrun by cars, trucks, a Datsun pickup, heck they probably would lose a school bus.
I always hate in action movies how cars no matter the type or age are all capable of matching the exact speed of whatever their pursuing.
Apparently the fastest vehicle known to man is a all metal pick-up truck driven by the bad guys with two goons with guns shooting from the open truck bed. Stick that at the Indy 500 and it will somehow keep pace with the lead race car if the lead race car had an important witness/main characters loved one inside of it.
Tom Selleck’s kid (sorry, don’t watch it enough to… wait, JAMIE!) is driving, his (adopted? half?) brother, a more rebellious cop, says “No lights or siren if you want a collar.”
“What?”
“The minute you use lights or a siren, you’re going to warn them and then it’s a footrace. But that’s IF you want a collar.”
“Why wouldn’t I…?”
“See, a lot of cops blare the siren, perp’s gone by the time they pull up. You make an attempt at a chase, but you give up, and no collar! Therefore, no paperwork.”
“That’s a thing?”
“Oh, yeah, for lots of the beat cops. But you’re the commisioner’s kid, like royalty, so no one’s gonna tell you this stuff.”
I have kids and they need to learn about my youth so I’ve been subjecting them to Throwback Thursday’s while they eat dinner. They don’t have to watch, but it’s 1989 in their bedroom also so no iPads or Echo Dots in there either.
Held Up:
Cloak & Dagger
Wargames
Innerspace
The Thing
Adventures in Babysitting
Lord of the Flies
Stand By Me
Airplane!
Die Hard
Ghostbusters
Not Held Up:
Stand and Deliver
The Dark Crystal
The Shining
The Karate Kid
Ghostbusters II
These are controversial choices. I’ve not seen the shining that recently but I’d say Dark Crystal has definitely held up. It’s a product of it’s time, you can almost smell the patchouli and weed of the hippies who made it , but it’s still a great film
The above listed movies were all ones I loved. The ones that ‘held up’ are the ones that my children love now also.
Intergenerational Staying Power is what we’re talking about. As far as why? I don’t know. I don’t fully understand this new generation yet but I am trying.
My kids are young enough that the only things I can say have held up that way are The Snowman and Wallace and Gromit (though only the Christmas special with Sean the Sheep)
This one might be controversial, but when I first saw The Matrix it rocked my face off. It was a little bit shocking as it pushed the envelope of special effects and I don’t think I saw the Big Reveal coming.
Saw it recently and pretty much hated it. The dialogue felt like something a college freshman philosophy student would write. The people weren’t characters, they were archetypes. The simplistic theme was beat over the audience’s head time and time again. Really did not care for the writing at all.
