Wife and I have been so covered up with work the last few months that we haven’t been able to go to a movie. The last movie we attended was The Thin Red Line last summer… “ohhhh hummm yawn.” I have never looked at so many jungle scenes for soooo long a time. I think it is over 3 hours long.
Anyway this is our spring break (we are both music teachers) and we thought we’d go to a good movie this week. Any suggestions? And why??
Skip Drowning Mona. This movie barely made two stars in my book. Even my kids were not impressed (and they loved the Pokemon movie). Weak plot, bad pacing, no escalation of the absurdity (a must in a black-comedy farce). Some really great lines, though, which got it the second star. My advice: Wait for it to come out on TV, and even then, skip it if bowling is on.
If you like John Irving, are pro-choice and it’s playing anywhere near you, I really liked Cider House Rules. Michael Caine is amazing. I’ve always hated him before and this performance really made me change my tune.
Haven’t seen anything recently, but I do recommend catching American Beauty or The Green Mile at the dollar show if you have one nearby. I wasn’t that impressed with The Sixth Sense, but everyone and their brother loved it, I don’t think you’d be disappointed.
Mission to Mars looks good to me, and I hope to see it, haven’t heard the reviews, but its generally my opinion that they are as reliable as throwing darts at the movie listings. If you like Sci-fi/Action movies this would likely be a great choice, good cast and great sFX.
Saw “Final Destination” last night, rather against my will, but I was pleasantly surprised. It’s a bit gory in parts, but all in all, it carries suspense throughout the whole thing. And as an added bonus, the cinematography is absolutely top-notch! Suspense-wise, I think it rates up there with “Sixth Sense”.
If you’re looking for a good comedy, I saw Galaxy Quest a couple of weeks ago and enjoyed it. Of course it may require you to have a love/hate relationship with Star Trek to appreciate it.
Music teachers, eh? Even if you have to drive into another state to find it, don’t miss Topsy Turvy.
It is funny, touching, spectacular, and has great tunes. It is the story of the writing and staging of “The Mikado,” but also very much more.
Besides, you can play “spot the Brit character actor.” I counted one from Blackadder, one from Red Dwarf, and one who used to swallow and regurgitate light bulbs. (Doesn’t do any of that in the movie, though.)
