Thinking About Moving To Mexico From The US. What Do I Need To Know?

This has been something psycat and I have been thinking of for a while. It started as kind of a whim, but we have discussed it more seriously lately. Think of it as kind of a 70s-ish “dropping out” type thing. We’re both a little tired of the rat race and would like to make work less of a priority. I’ve been reading a lot of stories online of people (mostly retirees) moving to Mexico, but none of them really have any specifics on visas, land ownership, etc. We’re thinking of moving to a smallish town somewhere in Baja, since we both love the ocean and the possibility of doing a lot of sailing in that area.

Have any of you made this move before? Any native Mexicans out there to give us any information? One thing I am considering is supplemeting our income with some contracting work(in nuclear medicine, my current field) back in the states every couple of months or so. Any specific tax information we should know about? Also, our timeline for doing this is about 5 years from now, so if there’s any prepatory stuff we can do to establish residency, etc, that sort of information would be helpful.

I wasn’t sure whether to post this in MPSIMS or GQ, but I figured I might have a wider audience here.

Any information/insight is appreciated, thanks!

Goddammit, you’ve been talking to Nen without me again.

Can I at least come visit? Please?

Hey Demo, I have an uncle that lives in San Miguel de Allende…he is an artist down there who frequents a lot of the touristy and big cities a lot because of his work. He used to come to the States more often but I usually see him when we head down for our family gathering in Puerto Vallerta.

Anyhow, if you are serious about this, I will get in touch with him and his friend and have them contact you. He’s lived down there for as long as I have known him, (he’s my step-uncle but a great man) I was 11 when I met his sister (my step-mom) and I am now 33.

Anyhow email me with your contact information and I will talk to my uncle and have him contact you. He has a dual citizenship, which, until recently, was virtually impossible to get.

So get in touch with me.

Spanish?

Ha! I crack me up!

Hi Demo,

I’ve lived in Mexico for more than 20 years so if you have any specific questions you can e-mail me.

While speaking Spanish isn’t a must, it will obviously make everything that much easier.

There is a lot of info on immigration, property and most everything else at this site:

You may want to try living here for a few months before you burn many bridges at home. It’s not for everyone.

Nym, heh, yes I have, actually. Of course you can come visit!

tech, thanks, I will be in touch with you soon.

CBEscapee, thanks so much! I’ve been on that site all day today. It’s got tons of info.

Don’t try to explain that you’re moving to Mexico from the U.S., the guards will think you’re insane and therefore up to something.

I don’t have any advice other than to tell you to talk to Shayna. She lived in Puerto Vallarta for a couple of years and could probably give you some insight on what you will need to move.

You can do steroids there legally. So you can get to be one big strong dude cheap! Also you can get any anti biotics you need plus any pain pills without spending $50 on a doctor.

You are going to have it wired.

That should be illegal. Most definitely. All my friends are leaving the country! And what’s this with giving me a hard time for leaving California, Demo? Huh? HUH?

Good on you two. You’d better have one hella Dopefest so I can fly out and see you off before you go!

Dammit, beat me to it.

Not to mention the leetel girls!

w00t!
Rasa, don’t worry, you can come down any time.

Here’s my uncle’s web site
