This always bothers me about Deep Impact (1998)

So, in the movie, Leo Biederman sends Dr. Marcus Wolf a picture of the comet.

Marcus Wolf speeds down the road and dies in a car crash.

The comet is named Wolf–Biederman because everyone thought Leo Biederman was in the car crash and died.

That’s what President Morgan Freeman said in his press conference.

Where did they think Leo Biederman’s body was in the wreck? Burned up?
Did they look for teeth, belt buckle, bones?

Wouldn’t there be a school memorial that Leo’s family would have attended?
Wouldn’t the Wolf family talk about Leo’s death to his family that didn’t happen?

“No, Leo’s mowing the back yard now!!”

Am I missing something?

I just assumed it was just a miscommunication on the way to the president. “One of the scientists who discovered it died” became “The scientists who discovered it died.”

It wasn’t named that because they thought that both died. It was named that because they were the discoverers. Comets are always named after their discoverers.
