This call may be recordered... Can I legally record them then?

I live in MD. IANAL
Years ago I had some trouble with an ex-bf.
I had tapes and tapes and more tapes of him calling me and threatening me, and even though it was on an answering machine, and even though he knew he was talking to an answering machine and he knew he was being recorded by the answering machine, those tapes were worthless.
It’s not enough to have all parties consent to being recorded, they have to know why they are being recorded and what the recording can or will be used for.

I knew a man who tapped his own phone because he suspected his wife was cheating. She was. When he filed for divorce and he thought he could use the tapes as evidence, he’s the one who got in trouble.

I’d tell anybody who is even thinking of recording a conversation “don’t do it”. Especially in MD.
