This Darned Tree

I was just sitting here wondering why I put up a tree this year, with all the problems I am having with 2 cats , a 6 month old puppy , and 1 18 month old puppy wannabe, and I jotted down this song , sung to the tune of “Walkin’ In A Winter Wonderland.” I hope y’all enjoy it.

Setter tails, they’re a waggin’.

Christmas tree- it’s a saggin’.

The darned kitties climb,

I whip their behinds,

Why did I ever put up this darned tree?

Thank you Mom, for this great toy!

The ornaments, they’re a great joy!

The tree skirt’s the place

For wiping my face!

You’re so great for puttin’ up this tree!

I’m so tired of picking up the trimmings.

So very tired of yelling ‘Go lay down!’

I swear by all that’s holy they are winning.

I never thought this tree would make me frown!

A nasty day, they’re all inside here.

My sanity said good-bye dear.

Muddy paw prints,

They don’t take my hints,

Why did I ever put up this darned tree?

Gold beads strung, they don’t stay up.

“Nicky don’t ! That’s a bad pup!”

“Kharma leave that alone,

Or you’ll find a new home!”

Why did I ever put up this darned tree??

Setters sleep, on the Green Bed.

They look so sweet, happy, well fed.

I guess I was wrong,

When I wrote this song,

I’m so glad I put up this old tree.

Yeah, I’m so glad I put up this old tree !

…and speaking of threads that died the death of a junebug…

Good Boy.
Have a treat.

I’m a girl, thankyouverymuch.

Sorry. My brain doesn’t always handle type to well. I read papa.

LOL not a problem. Most people think it’s PapSmear.

PapSett, I feel your pain. Sadly, I cannot express it as well as you did.

Our tree is going up tomorrow night. Complete with anchor chord to the wall so when my cats decide to play King of the Tree it won’t go BOOM crash. I’ve given up on putting any ornaments I like near the bottom as they become kitty fodder. Tinsel? No way in hell. Heck, sometimes it’s difficult to stop Bernie from trying to eat the lights.

Presents under the tree? Fuhgedabouit. Bernie eats the bows. Cleo just eats the tree. sigh.

I liked your song.

I’ve been lucky. My critters usually leave the tree alone. There’s one ornament that the dog is obsessed with, and as long as it’s place low enough for him to nuzzle, he’s good. The cat just sits under the tree looking pissed.

My mother has a ton of (functional) jingle bell ornaments as a cat alarm. So far my ferrets haven’t done much more than burrow under the tree skirt, messing it up, and batting at low-hanging ornaments.

My mother said that her first Christmas as a married woman and out of her parents’ house, she had primary responsibility both for a dog (her first “baby”) and a live Christmas tree for the first time. She thought that trees must really need a lot of water, as it seemed to be low every time she checked, until one day when she walked past the tree and heard loud “lap-lap-lap-lap” sounds from underneath. Apparently the dog liked pine-flavored water.

We used to have a cat that would “adopt” all the bows on the presents. They would disappear, then late at night we’d here her making those “mama cat” sounds. We’d find her arranging her “babies” in a row on the Living Room floor.
