Well, Miller, the foul language thing on the main page is new. Presumably lissener would not be making such thread titles anymore.
…
And especially not at work.

Well, I’m the OP for one of the fuckity-fuck-fuck titled threads mentioned (the spyware one), and I only saw “Those…” on the forum welcome page when it was the most recently responded-to thread. I must admit it gave me pause and I wondered if I had violated some tisk-tisk, prefiltered rule of SDMB etiquette. Am I the only one that saw that?
I only peppered the OP title with such liberal obscenities because I got called out on my last Pit thread for not using any profanity. That, and the fact that I was absolutely infuriated, hence my post in the Pit. But that’s the beauty, the glory, the unashamed indulgent experience that is the Pit. Again, I’m all for what I thought was the case - that the title was “censored” for the main page - I can understand that. Just so long as I can still curse like a sailor when the situation warrants it.
I’d say sorry, but c’mon, we are all adults here (or at least over the age of 13), and it’s probably not anything you haven’t read before. Except maybe “coporaphagic bottom-feeders”, that might be a new one to some people.
You know, it just occurred to me that ‘coprophagic bottom-feeders’ is almost certainly redundant.
I am in full support of the OP.
You people never seem to think about us foreigners who do not use the type of language that seems to be considered an obligation on this forum. Sort of a sport to throw as much as possible vulgarities in one single line.
To extend this weird sport - that with such a dedication is cultivated here - to the titles of the threads is disgusting.
Every time I see such a title it disgusts me more, and I am here now a member for year… (minus a few days I think)
Sorry, I do not get used to this.
Maybe you could come in to it that such thread titles indeed have the potential to scare new visitors to even open one single forum to start reading.
It does not reflect well on the global standards of a message board if you read one vulgarity after an other in thread titles when opening the main page.
Let be when opening this particular forum as the first you happen to look at for exploring what this message board has to offer.
Salaam. A
I’m not much of a rah-rah-go-USA type generally speaking, but this is an American messageboard, and it seems rather wrong-headed to expect an American messageboard to conform to the social standards of another country. Or, in this case, what would surely have to be every other country, because every nation on Earth has different standards for what they find offensive, and virtually every nation on Earth has at least one representative posting somewhere on these boards. And, of course, many of those standards are mutually exclusive, meaning we’re pretty much guaranteed to be offending someone, somewhere, no matter how carefully we post.
Perhaps you should find somewhere else to post, then.
If people are being scared off this board because they see some nasty language, well, small loss to the boards, then.
So suppose the rule were made that certain words would be prohibited in thread titles. What’s next? No cussing within the first so many characters of the post, lest somebody move their mouse over it and get popup text? Then what… no cussing at all? No Pit?
No fucking way.
The Pit has a specific purpose, dammit! If you don’t like profane thread titles, don’t read the fucking Pit.
I have my email program set up so it sounds a fart (from farts.com) as an alert when I receive a new message.
Normally it’s just a sound to me. But it has special significance when I get a ‘new post’ message and the post is written by any of a few certain posters.
OK, back to the topic.
The SDMB, and especially the Pit, is not a very “nice” place much of the time. The thread titles reflect that.
Deal with it.
Do you mean “we” as in “a voluntary agreement by SDMB posters?” Good luck.
Do you mean “we” as in “the administration” and “making this a board rule?” Sure, why not. Come up with a list of the words that should not be allowed in a thread title, get the other SDMB members to agree with your list, and then I’ll do my best to convince my colleagues that we should implement your suggestion.
So far my personal opinion is that this is a board for adults, and seeing the word FUCK has never killed anyone. I would be more offended by a thread title such as “The US should use atomic weapons in Iraq” than by a thread title such as “My fucking boss is a goddamn tool.”
One hopes the two thread titles are not related;)
It just warms the cockles to see one’s efforts appreciated.
Enjoy,
Steven
Bifurcation is everyone’s problem. Much like inbreeding.

My left arm is getting a little tired, so I’ll make one final riposte and then move on. The statement you refer to was a fall-back position because you believed the primary position, mod action, was untenable. Note the fuller context of the statement you quoted.
I personally very rarely use “swear” words, but just because a rule wouldn’t chafe my hide personally doesn’t mean it is a good rule.
Arnold, it is good to see such a reasonable response to the OP’s request from the Administration. Well done sir.
Enjoy,
Steven
My, such coprocephaly!
I think we’re still waiting on Lesotho. Someone correct me if I’m wrong.
Would the word Whilst be offensive in the thread title?
Signed,
Purloined & Peevish
Although at my expense, I still giggle. Thanks bien, that’s the kindest remark I’ve heard all day.
Well that’s an end on it then. If a board administrator thinks it’s a good idea for thread titles such as “fuckety fuckety cuntsuck cumfart” to be blazoned across the welcoming page for the casual browser–as you obviously do, as evidenced by the snarkily sarcastic hurdles you offer me to overcome before you’d consider any examination of the issue–then that’s that.
Saddening, though, that even an administrator would rather puff his chest and pee on a tree than consider the public face this board presents. But whatever; administrators are human too, right?
(Note: the above tone was offered up in order to allow those who’ve made this thread an *ad hominem * issue regarding lissener and lissener alone to continue their disingenuous charade.)
And here, in post 68, we come full circle to post 4 - the most reasonable of solutions, overlooked already by the OP.
blush
giggle

I have nothing to add except that it takes some big fucking gonads to tell your boss you’re on SDMB all day because you’re doing research.
Dear lissener,
I fully admit to the charge of sarcasm. That is often my way of writing.
But instead of dismissing your idea (which has failed to win me over), my post was an attempt to point out to you the difficulties in implementation, with the hope that you would actually engage in a constructive dialogue regarding the devilish details. Unfortunately you did not see it as such: I see that my style of posting does not meet with your approval. I confess that I found your posts to be irascible and self-pitying, two qualities which usually do not bring out my best behaviour. I think it would be a mistake for me to attempt to work on your idea with you because of the possible personality conflicts which would detract from the goal. Therefore I will leave you to approach another staff member with your proposal.
Yours truly, etc.
