This gal is pretty chill

This one is better.

That looks dangerous.

Surely she doesn’t just step out of the water and sit on the ice.

I swam in Antarctica. It was cold, though I acknowledge it was bracing.

All I can think of when I watch these is my heart exploding if I were to try that - at ANY point in my life. Geez, I didn’t like it when the swimming pool got a little chilly in the summer.

There’s a kind of genre of YouTube videos that I love to watch, and have gotten my wife to enjoy watching, too.

It’s not so much about subject matter as it is about absolutely beautiful and relaxing style, soporific music, and artistic sensibilities and production values. It’s just a Xanax with a really short half-life and no adverse effects to watch them.

Jonna’s channel is one of those. Great camera work. Great drone footage. Incredible scenery. She’s also quite a talented artist, generally.

One criterion for that kind of channel, to me, seems to be that they don’t throw in an infinite number of momentary cuts … like … every three seconds … where nothing is actually edited out but a fraction of a second; it’s just to make the delivery choppy, presumably to appeal to the Way Too Much Red Bull crowd.

As to swimming in the ice water … well … I’m sure it’s quite good for mind, body, and soul, but – ahem – fuck that shit.

Every New Year’s here in Chicago there’s a Polar Bear plunge into Lake Michigan.

A crowd of people run into the lake together, and then run right back out.

On a National Outdoor Leadership School wilderness course in the Wind River mountains, my cook group was coming back from a resupply when we came upon a little pool fed by a mountain stream. As we hadn’t bathed in about 21 days, we decided to strip down, jump in, and scrub off some of the sweat.

The water was cold, but endurable. Until I put my head under; that felt like an actual physical blow. I’ve never been so cold.

Incredibly stimulating, though.

ASMR. Or at least a type of it. My YouTube guilty pleasure is Dream Build where a mechanic builds up high end bicycles complete with slow, swoopy camera work and a mellow soundtrack.

ASMR was exactly the way I’ve always viewed and considered that kind of video, understanding that – as you implied – it kind of really isn’t

Thanks much for that YT channel recommendation. As a guy who used to ride and wrench a fair bit, I’m quite sure I can blow a few hours on his vids !

There’s another YouTube channel you might then enjoy - Odd Tinkering. This is a man who finds old tools, toys, electronics, and such, and restores them. Doesn’t say a word, just meticulously disassembles, repairs, cleans, and reassembles whatever he’s working on. He does have captions explaining what he’s doing, or what tools he’s using, but the vids are as much for ASMR as for how-to. They’re incredibly soothing to watch, with the bonus of seeing a rusty old knife (as in the video below) turned into a beautiful gleaming instrument.

Oh, there’s a bunch of those channels, and I do love them. Good call !

There’s a Swiss guy with such a channel. News stories have been written about him, and how many of his fans ‘use’ his vids like they were benzos.

In this crazy world … it’s good to have a whole armamentarium of this kind of go-to*. Thanks for another addition to the list.

*This should not be taken in any way as a recommendation to substitute ASMR videos for your favorite adult beverage. There’s a nice synergy there

I fell through ice into a pond when I was about 14. It was only up to my chest so no real danger of drowning but the sudden cold is quite literally stunning. It takes your breath away and you can’t think straight at first.

The Ice Man takes a cold dip.

Agreed. I recognize her smile at the start. That’s the same smile I get when I’m running up a hill and it’s kicking my butt.

This video, posted here by someone else was my introduction to Jonna Jinton.

Just out of curiosity, has anyone seen any video of her handling anything made out of cold iron?

Last January I was on Shemya Island in Alaska. I witnessed a bunch of people doing the “Double Dip.” They dipped into the Bearing Sea, ran a few hundred feet, and then dipped into the North Pacific Ocean. Two oceans within a couple minutes.

My testicles would retract to my upper chest, somewhere near my lungs probably.

More Jonna…
