Fuck you, government of Slovakia. Putting 400,000 ethnic Roma into ghettos is barbaric, inhumane, and vile. In one ghetto, for the 600 Roma forced to live there (you are denying them entrance to other cities, afterall), only one faucet of running water exists! In another, 5,000 Roma are forced to live in a complex meant for 2,500. Furthermore, forcibly relocating 25,000 people as a “city beautification” project is fucking sick! May you fuckers in Bratislava one day learn what it is like to have your possessions taken and to be barred in a small ratty confine.
Major problems are coming your way, Slovakian legislators. If there isn’t a violent Roma uprising within a few decades, I’ll be surprised.
And you know what? I wouldn’t be that surprised if you had a young Roma with an Uzi spray one of your legislative meetings. Your fucking racist insanity will probably cost you dearly. There are no positive benefits to be reaped from ethnic cleansing, and you will reap what you sow.

My sentiments exactly.
Just that I can’t help but think that the Romas who DO fight back would be considered “terrorists”. Feh
Daoloth: Thank you for this thread. Sadly, there are plenty of other countries in Europe that have similar methods for dealing with Romani people. The ERRC has reports on the situations in several countries that you can download here
A dear friend’s mother was part Romani (not sure if that’s the proper grammar), and emigrated to the US after WWII. At least she managed to find happiness here.
Romanians do not think very highly of the Roma, either… My husband is from Romanio (he moved here 5 years ago) and is very predjudiced, unfortunately ):
Prejudice for the Roma exists heavily even in the US, from the term “gyped” to my law teacher expounding on how ‘gypsies’ are thieves. Her prejudice stems from the time she was robbed by a Romani on a bus in Italy. It’s very unfortunate, and she’s lucky there are no Roma at our school, lest she jeopardize her job. It was pretty disgusting. But that’s another subject, really.
Seriously, with all of this War On Terrorism stuff, a lot of shit is getting ignored in Eastern Europe. Same shit that goes on all of the time, nearly everywhere the perps can get away with it.
The story of the Rom is complex. They have nearly the same reputation any place they go, not entirely undeserved. They do NOT deserve this concentration camp treatment.
Sorry for the tangent, but wow, you’re the first person in the history of my entire internet career that knows what Daoloth actually is. Congratulations. Heh.
Disqualify Slovakia from NATO and the EU. Ban all arms exports to Slovakia. Expel them from the United Nations. Deny them access to the IMF, World Bank, and any other international lending agencies. I’m serious. This is, quite literally, Nazi behavior the government is engaging in. The Nazis forced the gypsies into ghettoes just like these, then later began shipping them off to Auschwitz.
On another note, the U.S. and all other democratic countries ought to permit immigration from Slovakia by all gypsies/Rom/Roma/Romany/whatever-the-current-PC-term-is; maybe with an exception for those with criminal records.
BTW, as terrible as Slovakia’s actions are, I don’t think that means we ought to tolerate or sympathize with anyone who went and machine-gunned the elected legislature of Slovakia. That would be terrorism. You vote out elected leaders; you don’t assassinate them.
Danimal- it would be difficult to limit immigration to Roma without criminal records. Remember, these people are who the police go to first when a crime is commited, and they can be convicted simply because they are Roma. They are condemned because of their parents many times, and nothing else.
Danimal: Barring them (or other Eastern European countries that abuse the human rights of their Romani citizens) from joining the EU ain’t gonna happen. Their joining the EU means that the Western European governments now have a good reason to deport Roma asylum seekers.
In October 2002 the UK home secretary, David Blunkett, announced changes to the Immigration and Asylum bill which means that asylum seekers from the 10 countries that will be joining the EU can be deported without appeal on the grounds that those countries are safe. A fact that the the UN, the European commission and even the UK Foreign Office disagree with.
Now this free movement thing is fucking bullshit. Roma are often denied this right. Czech Roma are pretty much banned from entering the UK. They are turned away from flights to the UK by British Immigration officials based in the Czech Republic. This, despite the fact that Czech citizens don’t even need a visa to travel to an EU member state. Cite
In October a legal challenge to this policy failed in the High Court. Cite
According to this story: Romania closes door on gypsies, it now seems that the Romanian government is refusing to let its Romani citizens leave the country.
