This is my Daddy, Grandson, Etc...Political Ads

In Illinois the poltical ads are in full swing and I see a bunch of them like

I’m sure you’ve seen those type of ads I mean.

Question is:

Do you like them? Or not?

Do you think it’s an effective means of getting the message across?

Any other thoughts?

Again, I’m referring to political ads regarding candidates running for office.

I dislike them to the point where they irritate me and make me NOT want to vote for the candidate

From a campaign stand point, it’s a good idea in theory. At least what they are trying to do. In all of my poli sci campaign management classes I took, we spent a lot of time going over political ads, what works and what doesn’t, etc. It’s always a good idea to humanize the candidate as much as possible (which ain’t easy with a lot of politicians). Several professors held up this 92 Clinton ad as the end all, be all perfect campaign advertisement, for instance.

The issue with the implementation you’re talking about in the OP is that. . . well, everybody expects somebody’s grandma or grandson to say nice things. Plus, it probably makes more sense to give the politician more face time, just like in that Clinton ad.

That said, I personally hate them. Just tell me about the issues, por favor.

If it’s a spouse, my perverted curiosity always makes me think, “so that’s who they put it to”.

I know.

I saw an ad locally that seriously had the guy’s mother on camera talking about what a swell guy the candidate is. I couldn’t believe it. I thought it was a joke, like saying, “My mom thinks I’m cool.”

Nope, a real ad! Amusing!

I haven’t seen any here, but what I’m thinking is (a) of course your mother (father, son, grandfather) loves you; and (b) they’re better than the ones that I criticized in another thread that don’t mention the candidate’s name, but only his opponent’s, criticizing everything about the opponent and in a lot of cases, either making things up, or taking things out of context.

I hate them, but I wasn’t going to vote for Carol Shea-Porter(D) or Bill Binne® anyway. I’m happy for them that their parents think they’re swell, but who told them to put that in an ad?

I’d be amused as hell, though, if someone found an opponent who was estranged from a parent and had an attack ad with their parent bad-mouthing them. “Even Joe Blow’s dad thinks he’d be bad for NH, listen…”
