Chain mail may be making a comeback as wearable computers.

Scientists at the University of Illinois have fabricated the world’s smallest chain-mail fabric. Combined with existing processing techniques, the flexible, metallic fabric holds promise for fully engineered smart textiles.

“The miniature fabric is an important step toward creating textiles where structure and electronics can be designed, integrated and controlled from the ground up,” said Chang Liu, a Willett Scholar and a professor of electrical and computer engineering at Illinois.

Some science fiction story/novel had what was called a “sapper glove.” It acted like a normal glove until you hit something, then it’s properties changed so that it was like getting hit with a brick, I can’t help but wonder if this material couldn’t be used in something like that.

There’s nothing sci-fi about sap gloves. They look like normal gloves until you get backhanded by one - then you notice the lead shot packed in around the knuckles.
