Two minutes between clicking on a thread and its appearance.
You’d think it was noon.
Since I don’t REALLY want any of you to go away, is there any way to speed the board up short of that? I know the mods etc are working on it, but what can be done?
Reader doesn’t WANT us to chip in for a server, for whatever reason.
Ed? Tuba? Mods? ANYONE? Is there ANY WAY we could help? I mean…I’ve heard 5 people offer spontaneously to give money tonight. Someone offered you a server in an ATMB thread recently.
I heartily agree. As I don’t have the internet at work, and my evening coincides with the American afternoon, and Ireland is the land that High-Speed Connections forgot - I’m pretty much reduced to checking the board before I go to work in the morning, which means I hardly get to read it at all these days. There’s got to be something we can do about this, isn’t there?
I started a thread here talking about the same things, and asked Tuba and Ed if the issue was server hardware or a bandwidth issue.
The thread was moved to “About this board”…
I think it is the server hardware, i.e. amount of RAM and disk capacity. I have offered to build a server for them, and have not heard from Ed yet on it.
Well, I have a server that I could build into a decent SQL machine, since this BBS software uses MySQL, on an NT platform for the database backend. If it could be set up with 5 or 6 drives, I would software RAID 5 it, mirrored and striping with parity. Reads are BLAZING fast on this type of setup, since your data is spread out over several drives, and each one can be read simultaneously (or near enough). I set up an Informix server this very way for a client, and they have sometimes tens of thousands of read/writes an hour, with no performance lag.
Although, or perhaps because, I spend most of my posting in MPSIMS and the Pit, the threads there are by definition the most ephemeral. To be honest, almost all could vanish after a week without anybody noticing, much less caring.
This thing is running too slow right now to do a search on why, exactly, they won’t accept equipment and/or donations. I’d love it if they could figure out what they need to speed things up, then attach a dollar value to it, so I know how much money we’re talking about. I’d be happy to chip in, but I’d really like to know if we’re talking a buck each, five each, twenty each, or what. And I agree with thinksnow. I’d rather pay a one-time amount and keep the old threads than not pay at all and have them deleted.
I like the original idea. Let’s ban half the members!! To be fair, let’s make it the half with the fewest posts. That’s right, you’re not allowed to post until you have 500 posts.
